Who did Cats In The Cradle? I can't remember his name now. I can hear the song in my head.

Wasn't it fabulous? So haunting and i actually gave this to my brother as a warning when his son was born. It hits you real hard this one.

The song 'Cat's in the cradle' was used in a promotional video for peace in Northern Ireland during the troubles.
I'm actually surprised i found it.
Only watch this version if you are ready for a real kick in the guts.

Thanks, Oscar. The one by Ugly Kid Joe is the one I remember mainly. I think I saw the Northern Ireland version once on some programme.
The song always put a chill up my spine, even before I met the mother of my daughter and when I thought I was never going to be a Dad.

All of my life i have associated music with memories. every now and then, one song comes along that just blows you away and the lyrics stay with you fore-ever because they touch a chord within. That's how 'Cat's in the cradle' first got me.
When the promotional video came out using it for the Troubles in Northern Ireland, i remember the first time i ever saw it on tv. My spine went cold and i never ever forgot it. It was a stroke of pure genius to use that song and the shocking video just stunned you. It was some years ago and there was just nothing like that ever seen on British tv before. It could well be used today... still

Our leaders no longer lead the troops in the field. Perhaps they should lead the troops for every war they become involved with.

So true
I remembered another one of those songs that blew me away and touched that chord when i first heard it.
YouTube - The Living Years MIKE & THE MECHANICS
Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that Im a prisoner
To all my father held so dear
I know that Im a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
Im afraid thats all weve got
You say you just dont see it
He says its perfect sense
You just cant get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we dont see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
Its the bitterness that lasts
So dont yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you dont give up, and dont give in
You may just be o.k.
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we dont see eye to eye
I wasnt there that morning
When my father passed away
I didnt get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
Im sure I heard his echo
In my babys new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we dont see eye to eye

U2 Lyrics - Pride (In The Name Of Love)
One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One come he to justify
One man to overthrow
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed on an empty beach.
One man betrayed with a kiss
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
(nobody like you...)
Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love
In the name of love
What more in the name of love...

I cant believe the news today
Oh, I cant close my eyes and make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? how long...
cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...
Broken bottles under childrens feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I wont heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday bloody sunday...)
(allright lets go!)
And the battles just begun
Theres many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart
Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? how long...
cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...
Tonight...
Sunday, bloody sunday (tonight)
Tonight
Sunday, bloody sunday (tonight)
(come get some!)
Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away
I wipe your tears away
(sunday, bloody sunday)
I wipe your blood shot eyes
(sunday, bloody sunday)
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday, bloody sunday)
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday, bloody sunday)
(here I come!)
And its true we are immune
When fact is fiction and tv reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die
The real battle yet begun (sunday, bloody sunday)
To claim the victory jesus won (sunday, bloody sunday)
On...
Sunday bloody sunday
Sunday bloody sunday...

One two three
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me I don't give a damn.
Next stop Vietnam.
Five six seven
Open up the Pearly Gates.
Don't ask me to wonder why
Whoopee we're all gonna die.
There are plenty of songs about the carnage and pointless deaths in war. Yet, if everyone stopped joining up to the services, they'd only be conscripted.
Just the same, we also need to be able to defend ourselves. So, I don't know what the answer is.

I agree totally but i just believe that musicians and rock stars get through to new generations where sometimes education fails. I also believe that new generations have to be educated in the bloody battles or we risk history repeating it'self. To forget them is acceptence that no-one longer cares.... Maybe i believe this because i was indoctrinated with it due to my family's history in the two world wars.... I don't know... I do know that i was raised to never forget. Some may call that a curse?...
Apologies OM.... as usual, i've hi-jacked the thread :wah::wah:

No apology needed. A thread once posted is public property. At least you haven't defaced it.
It's been an interesting discussion as such.
I don't think the youngsters are really getting the message from the songs. I believe, though, that recruitment into the services has dropped since we've been at war. The services became a useful way for youngsters to learn a trade. But they don't want to be killed in the process.
My generation does not remember WW2. My grandmother, who adopted me, told me a lot of stories about it. My grandfather used to work for Bristol Aviation. He was an aircraft engineer and used to cycle in every day from Portishead. The German pilots used to shed their payload over them after bombing Bristol. They had 4 children then and Grandma would ge them up and tell them stories, sing songs and have a laugh with them. She would sit against the wall and she could feel the bomb explosions through it. She was petrified but she didn't want the kids to be scared and start having nightmares.

Yor right that recruitment has taken a dive in the past years. It was one of the main reasons to join the forces...to learn a trade, my god, i came close myself and nearly signed up for the Army in my early twenties. Your right, they don't want to get killed now. I often wonder what the generation of today would do if concripted into a war to defend their country?
So your family were in Bristol during the war? I am not a native of Bristol but since here i have researched a little of the Bristol war history.
I am in more of an up-beat mood today thank goodness :wah: but as i have hi-jacked your thread, i will sneakilly use it to dedicate a song to my local police force.:sneaky::sneaky:
Of course, it has to come from my hero's the Stranglers :-4 Do watch the video as their introduction on this one is quite amusing.
The words
Came down the line
Just a few words
At a time
The meaning
It was Clear
There was no sign of fear
The scene
That they described
Were sad
You could have cried
The journey's
Just too long
To even
Take the ride
It's always
The same
It's always
In vain
If the truth
Were only known
If the words
Had only shown
That lies and deception
They move in one direction
And then in the end you lose........
That lies and deception
They move in one direction
And then in the end you lose........
You lose
And now
The line is dead
You did everything
You ever said
You brought it down
You turned around
And what was said
Was said
The deed is done
You've had your fun
And home again
You'll run
You know inside
You'll never hide
And what was done
Was done
It's always
The same
It's always
In vain
If the truth
Were only known
If the words
Had only shown
That lies and deception
They move in one direction
And then in the end you lose........

I'm quite amused that the videographer settled on the bass when the electric guitar took the lead.
A good choice of song. It grows on you too.

You noticed!!!!!!! John Ellis on electric guitar, i have to say, is the most under-accliamed guitar genious's i have ever seen or heard. Seriously... this guy could put Clapton in the shade and he's never been acclaimed rightfully by the music industry.
Video's of John in the stranglers are few and although i have posted this one on other threads before, it's well worth the long watch just to see the final few moments as the track comes to the cresendo with Ellis on electric and Jean jaque on bass in perfect timing.(Have you guessed i'm their greatest fan yet) :wah: I was at this gig and my brothers bald spot can be see in the crowd. Well, you've been pretty quiet about being a Stranglers fan. I'd never have guessed!!!:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
Acoustic bass is a rarity, even now, but I first came across them in the 70s when people still said, "Far out, man". I guess the videographer wasn't paying enough attention and probably fooled by a spot of bass lead.
I have always liked the Stranglers anyway. They sure had the string section earning their crust.
The vids a bit too fuzzy to make out the audience. I did try.
Eric Clapton is ok. I like most of his earlier stuff but 'slowhand' just about says it all.

Jean Jacques was a classically trained guitarist before The Stranglers were formed and even if i hadn't lusted after the man for the past 30 yeras, I'd still state that he has to be the greatest bass of all time and i don't believe there will ever be another like him. When my love said to me
Meet me down by the gallow tree
For it's sad news I bring
About this old town and all that it's offering
Some say troubles abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here,
When the Belfast Child sings again
Brothers, sisters where are you now
As I look for you right through the crowd
All my life here I've spent
With my faith in God the Church and the Government
But there's sadness abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here,
When the Belfast Child sings again
When the Belfast Child sings again

Thinking of Simple Minds..... there was a number i used to play a huge amount when my father wa dying.
Don't You (Forget About Me)
Hey, hey, hey ,hey
Ohhh...
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognise me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ohhhh.....
Don't you try to pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security
Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby
Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on - call my name
Will you call my name?

YouTube is something that I have only experienced since I have been back on FG this year. The Internet seems to be subtly different to how I remember it back in February 2007 when I last was connected. Further, this year, I managed to delete my music files by accident one morning while I was nursing a hangover. This includes original work of my own and I am in the process, when I get the time, of recovering the files.
My taste in music varies, however, from week to week and month to month and is very diverse. I enjoy classical music as much as I enjoy rock, jazz, reggae, folk, and so on. I also like the weird as much as I like the conventional. But I will have a perusal on YouTube and see what I can find.
I last went to a weekend gig that was held in a field behind where I lived in Bedford. It was the first to be held and I have no idea if any more were held there as I moved to West Yorkshire at the end of that year. The gig was headlined by Jerry Lee Lewis but also included Donovan, and John Otway among others. My favourite set was Roy Harper who initially played solo and was then joined by his son, Nick. Brilliant stuff.
I’ve just had a look and it seems someone in the audience (about as far away as I was) shot a short piece of video of one of the numbers but not the best number they played.
