In April another dog will be given the title of the First Dog. It will most likely be a Portuguese Water Dog.

We've only had one First Cat in the White House.

Socks was a stray cat adopted by Chelsea Clinton when Bill was governor of Arkansas and received the title in 1993.

Being a cat lover, I'd like to see more First Cats, but would be happy to see a different species chosen.

If I was the President, I would have the first "First Ferret". :D

What pet would you chose as the First Pet of the White House, if you were the President?

I remember how cute Socks was and name one of our cats after him!

I know he is getting a dog, but I would like to see two cats.

How about a nice pet vulture? I can see it now, circling the Capitol Dome. It would be very symbolic in view of present economic status.

I wish them well with their choice of pet.

But I wish they had chosen a mixed race rescue dog for the simple reason that many will imitate the first family and will want to purchase the same type of dog, unscrupulous breeders will breed extra litters to take up the demand and then as the fad fades these poor animals will end up in rescue centers.

If they adopted a rescue dog of mixed race there would not be any other dog the same and most shelters carry out home checks before just letting people take a dog. That could help stop the impluse 'I want one like the Obama's' purchases.

The dog they are getting has to be hypoallergenic because one of the daughter's is allergic to dander.
