It's only honorary so it does'nt count it's a bit like getting the key to the city,
it does'nt nessesarily mean you get to let yourself into marks & sparks and help yourself in the middle of the night.
He wont be able to call himself sir though, other foreigners with the title include
Billy Grahem, Bill Gates, Bob Geldof, Bono & Rudolph Giuliani.

I haven't read the story yet , I will when done here, but as any American will tell you , the Kennedy's have for 3 or more generations thought of them selves as America's royal family or the closest to royalty as America can get. and being that they are very proud of being Irish though and though , it doesn't take much of an imagination to see how this came about.:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

I have read the story and will stick to what I said before . I wasn't aware of all his doings with the IRA support and all that part of his actions. To tell you the fact of the matter, When ever the Kennedy name would come up in the news over the last 25 or so years I would trun a deaf ear. I was reading some of the comments on the story and it seems that politicans are about the same kind of butt licking ,swindlers and two faced creatures no matter where they call home. JMHO

JMHO Exactly and to be honest i think this is more of a publicity stunt to tie in with Gordon Browns vist to meet Obama. Ted's been involved in Ireland for years and we have had the peace agreement in Ireland for some time so they could have given him this anytime. The timing makes it suspicious.
I would say that the Kennedy's are probably the closet America will get to a Royal family in terms of public and media attention.
At least now he can call himself 'Sir Edward Kennedy'

No offence taken :wah: I was rather peeved when there was a possibility that Obama was going to appoint Caroline Kennedy as Embassador to Great Britain. During the war Joe kennedy held the same position and he overtly favoured Hitler over Sir Winston Churchill.
I'm going to put a link in for you. It's not to divert the thread into the America supporting The IRA thing but to show you how close the tie is with Britain and the Kennedy's. This is a pro IRA video and the bomb they show went off two to three miles from my house in my home town.

Just a thought Mrs O but doesn't this mean 'Sir Ted' will have to come to London to visit the queen? I'm not up on this Royal protocol lark but would he have to come and collect it from Buckingham Palace? If so, how wonderful to have a Kennedy in the country.

I had a pretty good idea about why your politicians are up in arms from reading the comments after the article linked to in the OP. After a lifetime spent turning a deaf ear maybe i need to re train that deaf ear to hear when the name Kennedy name comes up. . With the car off the bridge and Marilyn Monroe happings and all the other 'little' crappola. They have always been so much fluffy embarrassment to the people in my neck of the woods.
you know the inter net never ceases to amaze this dumb ole hick from the sticks . i have been surfing the web for close to 10 years and have never come across the intense emotions that I have today reading the comments in that newspaper and the utube posts just now. I tend to stick to what my grandma always called "my own backyard" meaning the happings in and about the USA. I still am surprized at times at the amount of attention payed to the US from people from other countries, the intence feelings ,some positive some negitive felt by other countries.
I have to update my flash player before i can watch the utube video and am doing that now. I have not ever bothered with videos and music mush. i know that makes me sound like a cave man days or something but there it be, ugga ugga . :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

Any British newspaper has these sections and it's the best place to look to see how 'real' people feel and not just the journalist.
I feel pretty bad about slating Ted kennedy because John was such an Icon to the American people. I don't see Ted in the same light though and i hope you don't mind my being offensive to an American.
As in the comments section, Britain only too well remembers Ted's involvement with Northern Ireland during the troubles. He may have redeemed that of late by working with Blair and Trimble for peace but in my humble opinion, he should never have meddled in the first place. Yes, the Kennedy's are of Irish descent so it can be argued that Ted has a say in Ireland but IMHO, he is American first and fore-most and should have butted out. Weather the IRA were viewed as gallant freedom fighters or Terrorists, the fact remains they brought death and destruction to our country for many years. It was more personal to me i suppose as i was in my house when the IRA bombed the hotel of the link i added just 2 or 3 miles away from me.
I also remember seeing Ted on tv in Northern Ireland and telling one of our British soldiers to go back to his own country. The soldier replied 'This IS our country' Touche!!!!
I don't think Ted will be getting a warm reception from the British public when he arrives to meet the Queen. Especially when the IRA murdered Lord Mountbatton.
I think with any high profile family there will always be the conspiricy theories such as Monroe etc but it is just Ted's involvement in the past with N.I. that bugs me.
This is not going to do our PM any favours. The country is asking WHY??? WHY HIM???

I make a habit of reading the comment on an article for the very reason you stated. No, I don't mind you saying what you feel towards an American especially one that has had a hand in making a bad situation if not worse than certainly not any better . I have always wondered if JFK would have been such an Icon in America if he had not been shot and had finished out his term or terms as president? Of course that's one question that will always be just a question. I'm thinking your right on the money when you say Kennedy won't be getting a warm reception from the people when he shows up. This may be because my folks have not ever 'bought into the Kennedy family as Icons " but I tend to believe that because Teds political career hasn't been all he thought it should be ,this 'honorary knight 'deal is a last ditch attempt at a better than medeoker eulogy of a Kennedy's life?IMHO

I was always more interested in their connection to the IRA and politics than the fairy tale. Again, IMHO i believe Kennedy was 'not all that' as a President. I have always questioned much of the Kennedy's. I too have often wonder what events would have been if he'd finished office or indeed if Robert had followed him.
This Knighthood at the response of the British is unfortunate in it's timing. A minister came out a while ago and warned that there was rumblings in Northern Ireland and this week a slinter group of the IRA have murdered two British soldiers. With the country in fear of the peace agreement being blown apart and the troubles flaring again, to see Ted Kennedy in London when he is viewed as an IRA sympathiser, is likely to raise hackles. I would not be at all surprised if there are demonstrations and protests in the streets over this. The next few weeks will be interesting.
