Do you know what's on the web?

A few weeks ago, i bought a woman's magazine here and there was a story about an American lady in there. To cut a long story short, her young and very beautiful daughter crashed into a toll booth in her Porshe. She googled her daughter's name to read up on the accident and came across a forum where some-one had posted pictures of the inside of the car with her dead daughter at the wheel. Some of the comments on this forum were just awful and she couldn't believe how sick people could be. The only place these pictures could have come from was the police photographer on the scene. When her daughter was killed, the police told her that it was best she didn't see her. When she clicked onto this forum, there were these pictures of the poor girl with no face and bits of scalp everywhere. Naturally, this was really upsetting for her.
Out of curiosity, i googled the girls name and found the forum. As her mother said in her story, the pics are still on the net and are absolutely gruesome. I felt guilty for even looking at her and wished i hadn't. It got to me a bit and i mentioned it to a neighbour a few days ago and she told me about a sight that was even worse along with another site of famous people's dead bodie's. She said her kids regually went to this site so again, curious, i had a look.
I just can not believe what i have seen. How can anyone be allowed to post these kind of pictures that kids are googling??

How awful!
I read a blog entry here on FG about an American politician who shot himself in the head at a press conference,
I googled him and watched him do it and the images stayed with me for a long time.
It's human nature to look I suppose but for the families of the victims it must be horrendous.

That's why kids should have adult supervision while on the net.

There was another pic of a woman dead in the road horrifically injured and some sicko wrote 'If i'd been the first paramedic on the scene, i would have shagged her'. Good god...... people are sick. I checked out the sight of famous people that the neighbour said her kids looked at and i've just seen JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, Saddam etc.
If people let their kids look at this then how can they have any concept of violence to another?

There has got to be something this mother could do to get those photos off the inter net . And there has to be a way to stop police photographers from publishing photos like that .This is so awful I can't find words to express the kind of anger it makes me feel. Would you give the name of the magazine or if there is any contact info for this grieving mother? I would like to send her a message of support and condolences. I don't want to see the photos of her daughters wreck and death because that would hit to close to home for me and I personally know I couldn't deal with it.
I am a member of a couple of grief forums and once in awhile there will be some one post very cruel messages about what a member or members post . Those posts are spam and deleted , yes there are some really sick individuals in the world . It makes a person wonder if these sickos have ever lost a close loved one themselves?

I nearly didn't post this thread because of your Verna. I didn't want to upset you if you saw it. I have looked again at the story because i also wanted to send a message to her mother. There is no specific contact but what i will do is phone the magazine in London that should have a contact for her through the freelance journalist who interviewed her. In the story, the mother fought to get the pics off the net but there was no law in her state that stopped anyone posting pictures of that nature. She got lucky because the site was based in California where there is a law to stop these pics getting onto the net. She won her case but the pics are still on this forum with the sick comments. I'm going to put her name in a reply to the post after yours. If you google her.... please do not look at the pictures. She is not in one piece that's all i will say.
I'm sorry if i've upset you with this thread but i was so horrified by what i saw and i wanted to know if others knew what sicko's there are ou there.
Sending you my thoughts :-4

I will wait for any info you get by phoning the "magazine in London that should have a contact for her through the freelance journalist who interviewed her" . Thank you for thinking of my situation with my Verna , ,but , also thank you for posting this story, I have been trying to find info about police photographers and 'policy' ever since reading this thread and so fr all I have come up with is a story about a law suit in New York against a police photographer that has published a book of photos of 9/11. The city lawyers are saying the city holds he copyrights to the photos because the photographer was on the pay roll of the police dept. at the time the photos were taken.

When Mr O and i went through the sites of other road accident pics..... we looked for British accidents and there wasn't one. Most seem to be from America and Russia where may be some States don't have the law to stop the pics being leaked and posted. It was the comments as well, it seems some sick people actually enjoy this. I have never been so horrified. I so wish i didn't look now. I rang the magazine and they said to ring back in the morning to speak to the features departmen which i will do and update you.
I suppose on a tech, if the photographer is employed by the city, the city may have rights to those pics but it is morally and ethically wrong.
I got a pic to send you for Verna.

Thank you for the pic. I am going to put it on her on line in memory of page.
I have been reading the news stories about the lawsuit . If the family wins and is awarded the amount they are suing for and if they use it to pay the huge legal fees and the bill for site that works to get stuff like those photos removed ,Reputation Defender, then donates the remainder if any to charity of their choice or sets up a scholarship in their daughters name that would be go a long ways towards the closer the family needs to try and keep their sanity and raise the 2 daughters they have at home . But if they have to spend years paying on the debts and knowing those photos are still out there it will be pretty rough all the way around for that family.IMO
I did find this , and while photos aren't specified it seems it would be logical hat they would be 'covered' ?

The Scholarship in their daughters name is a lovely idea.
I hope that i will also be able to send the mother a message to let her know that people in England were affected by her story and thinking of her.
Mr O's brother skidded on black ice on news years eve...... many years ago but he hit a tree and his fiance was killed instantly. The police put no blame at all on him but even after all these years Mr O can remember the crash scene. She was only 21 yrs old... Barbara. So we can understand a little of how sick this is to post these pictures.

At the bottom of each news story there is an email address to the author of the story. I wonder if that could be a way to get a message to the family. it seems plausible to think that with all the 'sicko' and legal attention this story has gotten their must be a site that people can leave condolences and support comments , but then on second thought maybe the family wouldn't 'trust' the public ,

I am sure this is the same name as the woman who wrote my story up. Either that or there is two journalists with the same name. I still have her mobile phone number and e mail address. She looks so full of smiles and life...... It must be so hard for you. I saw the angel i posted here on her page, it was nice of you to put that there. No, Verna didn't have any kids. the photo is of her best friend April since 3rd grade and her son . Out of all the sites I have ever been on that a person can 'build' a in memory of page, this is by far the best simply because it when a person builds a page ,that page is saved for ever even if you don't start paying for it. When I first started Verna's page 'I was so broke I couldn't pay attention' and so it was quite awhile after the 'trial' that I was able to start paying to keep it up and the link live. I have a page for my brother that I had paid for the 1st year he was gone it has been non active for almost a year now , but when I do go to pay for it to be on the web for life everything I have on it will be exactly like it was when I put it there. Every other site that advertises this kind of thing will only 'save' your page while you are paying for it and they all over month by month and are very expensive IMO. One more thing about these pages you have the choice of making them private to where only you can access it or public plus your can set it to where any one like family or friends can post photos , memories ,condolences etc... and the site will send an email with a link so you can approve it or not before it's made public. This site has been a real comfort to me in the last 7 years simply because it is my personal tribute to Verna's memory. And just in case anyone might think that there is any reward or anything if I Refer someone ,there is not. My only reward is if someone that is grieving a loved one that has passed away and goes there and is comforted by building a page in memory of their loved one then that's it. This site also has a grief forum for sharing with others going though the same experience.
Thank you for lighting a candle Oscar. That was really very nice .:-4

I didn't know about that sort of stuff on the Net, but it doesn't surprise me.
Very sorry to hear about the story and the sad memories it bring up - not to mention the anger at some people, which I share. I'm fortunate enough that none of my family have died in that fashion, but I've lost a friend on black ice and it brought back the memories. I know how I'd feel if someone had posted pics of him...
One thing that I think plays along with this is that people - young ones and kids in particular - are in some cases being "de-sensitised" to this sort of thing and I reckon computer games are partly to blame. Ever seen Grand Theft Auto? Even games that aren't that grotesque can damage people, I think: Many "good" games allow you to play the hero or the villain, and playing the villain causes you to "act" in a truly appalling way. It isn't "real", but it is a rehearsal.
Am I making sense?
The same argument was made for tv, but never proved. I think it is more real for computer games because with the tv, your engagement was passive. In computer games you are active and actually doing the bad thing, rather than just watching it. I think that makes a difference. It worries me.

I think even if kids saw the pics of this girl and trust me, i wish i'd never looked, do they understand that she is real life? That is the reality of a car crashing at 100 mph. Do they understand that? When they see the pic of JFK dead in the hospital with a hole in his throat and the top of his head gone..... do they understand that some-one did that to him but he didn't get up like they do in the games?
I have seen Grand Theft Auto and i'm appaled by it. I do not understand parents who buy this for a kid.
Morally, i find these sites sick and i can't even get my head round the States that won't outlaw the posting of them. Out of decency for the family, they owe them that and they don't owe some sicko who get's his jollie's lavishing over them. Especially when there are peeps like SK who lost her young daughter in a car accident. When i saw the pics of the girl, i felt as if i was intruding and it was a horrible feeling. I will be able to find out more about the mother in the morning and will do a brief update on here if you want to follow it.

Good idea, I hadn't thought of that . I was thinking ,that family has got to be "gun shy" of most anything comeing from anyone . I read in one of the articles that as lat as last August the 2 gils would still receive spam in the inbox with what looked like a ledget address but when opened had the photos and trash talk inside. so I figured if we could use The Gardens letterhead 'so to speak' our messages would have abetter chance of being opened and read. August 2008 was the last news report update I found.

The Garden's letterhead would show it was a legit forum but going from what i read on the forum who posted the pics, again she may think it's sicko's again. What is wrong with these people who want to torment a mother and sisters like this? I wish they could be tracked and prosecuted. You never know, maybe the journalist who did me, knows the journalist who wrote about her well enough to get us a better way of contact. I will do my best. I'm guessing the mother did this interview for a British magazine very recently to raise awareness so she must expect some communication.
