So did I, more people killed in pointless violence, I hope this is something that isn't the start of a new trend in violent dissident Republicanism in the North, that is the last thing we need right now.

No. We don't need this to rise again. We don't need more troubles like this. And this is outright murder. Not even a warning was given.

Looks like it is rising again galbally. I can't remember who or what exactly he said but i read a very worrying article in the press very recently...... some-thing about the SAS being back in Northern Ireland. I'll try to find it.

Yes, its bad news for us here. Everyone is still a bit in shock in the North and the South at the minute, as there haven't been soldiers killed for a long time, and we'd hoped that was behind us, so its hard to know if this is the start of a campaign of violence by an hardline IRA splinter group, or a random opportunist attack by a bunch of Republican die hards. The omens are bad though.
In any case, its a tragic loss for the families of the two young men murdered. I hope that there isn't some sort of vengence taken by the other side now, on some Catholic target, as thats the way these things used to go, and on, and on. A terrible day for Ireland, to see these old wounds open up again, but more importantly its a human tragedy for the soldiers and civilian victims.
Terrible.

The answer is to treat it as a criminal act and use the resources of the police, who have the ability to call on the army for help, in arresting the perpetrators.
The huge mistake, which happened in the late 60s, is to clamp down on civil liberties in response. The reason the murders happened quite probably involves provocation to do exactly that.

Oh I'd imagine thats what will be done, anything else would have the potential to undermine the peace process, which is exactly what these boys wanted to achieve last night. They may well attempt some other attacks now to tempt the other side of the divide, or the politicians themselves to respond, hopefully the political class in Northern Ireland will in general have learned the folly of going down the routes attempted in the late 60s and early 70s. In any case, this is still an isolated incident, so lets not jump the gun here, we are a long way from 1973, or 1983, or even 1993 despite what happened last night.

It may well be telling to see who first makes a political issue out of this.

The Real IRA has claimed responsibility.

I'm sorry for you all there, Abbs, Gal, keep yer witts about ya, if you sense anything unusual trust your instincts and get some distance from the danger fast.I suppose because it's been so peaceful they got complacent, apparantly, the soldiers were getting ready to be shipped out to Afghanistan.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Northern Ireland now and I hope that this incident doesn't escalate out of control.

The police do have the ability to call on the army for help but it is the last thing they should do. It's exactly what these people want..... to engage the army to flare up old troubles. The police need to see it purely as a murder and criminal murder other wise we are back into the politics of it all.

It depends on what the civil authority calls on the army to do, surely. Bringing them onto the streets with their weapons isn't what I had in mind.

Well i didn't think for a moment that you would want the army back on the streets of Northern Ireland. I just believe that it should be kept as criminal murder and not use the proffession of the victems incase there is a remote possibility of flaring the troubles again and risking the peace agreement.

I think I saw something about a minister wanting some SAS back in N.Ireland a while back because there had been intelligence that something like this was brewing and the minister wanted to use their reconnaissance skills to keep an eye on it. It's likely that the intelligence services have a good idea who was involved even if it can't be proved.
I can't imagine the bulk of the Catholic community want to go back to the '70s and '80s any more than the Prods do. Is Sinn Fein saying anything on the matter?

Thanks Clod....that was the article i refered to but couldn't remember who it was and why. Yes, he was saying that intelligence shows that this has been brewing for some time and has been a bigger threat than they have let on to the public. They were expecting this by all accounts. Worrying

Yep, I was thinking of you when I heard it, we feel the same in the South, gutted actually and shocked, this is the last thing anyone wants. I just can't understand what these people think they are doing, its just so wrong. Northern Ireland deserves its peace now, there was so much conflict and trouble for so long visited on people up there, lets hope to god that this doesn't flare up into anything worse than it already is.

A quick scan of the BBC reports on this suggest that all the political parties in N.Ireland have outright condemned the attack. Seeing Martin McGuinness saying "the war is over" and that he denies the right of the Real IRA to do this still has the power to startle. It may just be that this incident is actually going to strengthen the peace process.
I hope so. At least those boys would have died for something positive.
