Workers carrying a mock grave have marked the end of 60 years of washing machine production at Merthyr Tydfil's Hoover factory.

They led a small procession from the plant on Friday as the last machines came off the production line.

The decision to end manufacturing means the loss of 337 jobs. Around 100 staff will remain at the site which retains its headquarter status.

There were about 50 people who took part in the march. Two brothers Malcolm and Gareth Williams have worked 72 years at the plant between them.

Workers at the Honda Factory in Swindon have been offered voluntary redundancy or a pay cut.

Dave Hodgetts, director at Honda in Swindon, sent a letter to staff stating the company would make a loss of £320m for 2009.

The firm is offering staff a last chance to take their "Associate Release Programme" (ARP), to help cut costs.

The letter tells employees: "We cannot find much encouragement for the next 12 months."

"The seriousness for the global car industry and the unpredictability of what will happen in the future cannot be underestimated."

Management at the giant Airbus plant in Flintshire have confirmed they are looking at shedding 250 agency jobs.

Unions met management at the Broughton wings factory, which employs just over 6,000 people, to discuss staff levels

Airbus said it was looking at reducing staff in "a review of its business and manpower requirements."

The Welsh Assembly Government said while "disappointing" it was "encouraging" the company was looking to avoid compulsory redundancies.

Unions said they would continue to talk with the company to try to minimise job losses.
