On this first day of Spring, Michelle Obama and local elementary school students broke ground for a herb and vegetable garden on a portion of the South Lawn at the White House. It's part of the first lady's promotion of healthy food for America.
This project resulted after a campaign by gardeners and sustainable-food activists.
The President's family and their guests will be enjoying the produce from this garden.
Do you put in a garden to have fresh produce?
Do you think this project at the White House will encourage families to consider putting in one?

I created a veg plot last year. Just put my broad beans in (fava beans, I gather you call them) and am waiting for a friend who has bought about three times the seeds she can possibly plant to bring round the excess. Also have Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme. No Sage yet, though.
And yes, I suspect if the White House creates a veg plot, it might well be a positive roles model.

Yup, I reckon there'll be veg plots sprouting up everywhere now.
It might be a secret warning of things to come. There again, it might not be at all.:wah:

Do you think this project at the White House will encourage families to consider putting in one? We had pics of Mrs Obama is our press too. I think it's wonderfully encouraging and maybe something Mrs Brown could do to set an example.
As a child i was a gardeners orphan and my father grew everything from fruit to veg. I can remember one day as a stroppy teenager saying to my mother 'Why can't you buy vegetables like normal people?' :wah: After she asked me to go and dig some potatoes up and pick some mint. I got married very young and learnt very quickly that tinned fruit and veg wasn't the same of course. Now, both my husband and i are very fussy about our veg and we go to a near-by pick-your own farm. I can't grow veg in my garden because of the dogs and cats. Nothing beats fresh veg and herbs. We have one of the highest rates of obesity here in England especially in children and teenagers. I think we do have to get back to basics with food and i've come to loathe 'tv dinners'. Looking back on my childhood, i can remember that we were all far healthier for the fruits of my fathers labour. We never had spots, bad skin or were ever ill or overweight. There is alot going for fresh food.

You're right. When fathers were the breadwinners and mothers did not work outside the home, they spent their time differently -- some in preparing those nutritious meals -- from ground to table.
Also, without all the electronics, children actually went outside and rode bikes, ran around, climbed trees -- they made their own games which exercized their bodies and their minds.
Times have changed. When I was growing up, it was safe for me to go out and play all day long as long as I was back by supper. Now days, people fear for the safety of their children in their own back yards.......................
Are we truely better off today than we were 50 years ago???????

I just bought some marigold seeds the other day. So easy to grow! But I do buy tomato, hot pepper & sweet pepper plants. Also want to do zucchini this year and don't care if it takes up the entire yard:wah:
