The London Summit: The London Summit 2009 - Growth, jobs and stability

On April 2nd, world leaders including Obama will meet in London for the G20 Summit.

Given history of demo's and protesters, and given the current economic climate, protesters have hinted at violent demonstrations. They intend dumping tonnes of sand into major roads to cause disruption for starters.

2,500 extra police have been drafted in to deal with a 'possible' riot in the streets of London.

If we know this is going to happen, if we know it will get violent, if we know it will be a major head-ache for national security, If we know protesters have made threats already, then why are we holding this summit in the middle of London?

will there not be riots and protesters if it is held elsewhere?

i only ask cos ( maybe a bit ignorantly) i was going to post why not have it in London? why is it ok for anywhere else to put up with it but not London? London thinks it is the whole of England, but suddenly realises there are other places when it dont want somthing happening in its own back yard??

Simply because the heart of London is the most densely populated area. If there is a riot, innocent people could be hurt in higher numbers than else-where. The protesters will be swarming into the heart of London very easilly by train, tube or coach. If it were on, say, the Isle of Wight.... police and security could turn back potential trouble makers at the ferries or ports.

So are you saying the protesters are going to get dangerous and cause harm to people? and also the police in London will not be able to control them? oops just had a read of your OP again and yes you are saying they are likely to become violent.

If we know this is going to happen, if we know it will get violent, if we know it will be a major head-ache for national security, If we know protesters have made threats already, then why are we holding this summit in the middle of London?

So hold the summit somewhere else and let them deal with it:yh_rotfl:sneaky:

She has a point though, why not have it somewhere that there may not be trouble¦ somewhere that there are no people, North Pole, some part of Greenland, way up in Northern Canada, Lapland... there are lots of places.

Anywhere there are Hotels to bed the members is a possible venue.

The reason I have posted that I predict a riot, is down to the reports in the press about threats made already by protesters. The protesters are out in force at any summit but I believe this one will be far worse due to the current climate. Folk are losing jobs, their homes and business's and there are many angry people around. The police presence will not stop the most determined. In the past we have seen police officers injured and hurt.

I remember years ago...I think it was 2003/04 where the Repubs decided to do a the Gop convention in Philly. Loads of protesters got busted for "speaking their minds, etc."...we dems had the last laugh, they all got let off. In my book, wrong city to do a convention as Philly is a Dem city.

The problem here Ducks is that I am in no doubt that the extremists will goad the police into action so they can scream 'Police Brutality'. It's an old ploy but still effective. It's not a case of being allowed to speak their minds....the extremists don't want to just speak..... they actually want violence.

Would agree there Oscar. They really want the pitchforks out, etc, to stab the idiot who was running for a 2nd term. GW got his way by "scaring the crap outta everyone". Agree that the police have to control them, etc. but still peeps should be allowed to be seen & be protesting. The Gop does not want "those peeps to be seen or heard".

kaz: As the only one posting here from inside the M25 I have no objection to the event happening here - it is part and parcel of being the capital.

Think it would be smart to advertise the event in London and hold it say at Leeds Castle (just outside but easily accessible from Heathrow). Don't know that they will, though.
