A few weeks ago, I tipped 'War of Attrition' to win this years Grand National. He was certainly well favoured with the bookies backing his down from 40/1 to 16/1 in the past two weeks.

Sadly, his owner has pulled him from the race.

The word from the bookie's now, is that it will certainly see a win for the favourite 'Butlers Cabin' and i'm am inclined to agree.

One entrant that i have seen run myself many times is 'Knowhere'. Although he always comes 'no-where' :wah: The extra distance at Aintree should give him the bonus of making headway in the final stages, something he so lacked at Cheltenham. He is currently priced at 50/1 and certainly worth an each way bet for a place. He's a good jumper and stays the distance. With War of Attrition, Kauto Star, Denman and Exotic Dancer not in the running, this horse could just do it.

I will certainly be risking a few quid on him again.

Latest from the bookies...

Butlers Cabin....... down to 9/1

Knowhere......... out to 66/1

Don't forget that as the National is a handicap, the bookies pay a fourth place.

My bet is a 6 bet tricast for 1 2 3

Butlers Cabin

Knowhere

Hear the Echo

Happy betting punters.

So help me Oscar. The only time I ever look at horse would be the occasional Grand National. There's no doubting the excitement.

I need a good each way long shot to waste my tenner on.

I'm probably gonna have to collect the family's hard earned and place all the bets myself. Thats how it normally works

I'm probably gonna have to collect the family's hard earned and place all the bets myself. Thats how it normally works The National is a toughy to predict. The gruelling distance and jumps really mean it's anyones. If the going is firm, more horses should stay on their feet but then a faller can bring down the lot however good they are.

Reputation makes folk believe the worst jump to be 'Beecher Brook'. In my opinion, 'The Chair' is the most dangerous jump.

The horse to look for is a good stayer, something that does not tire and is a good clear jumper.

Although 'Knowhere' has not been placed, i have watched him run myself several times and he is a good strong horse that stays the distance and keeps on his feet.

He ran a superb race at Cheltenham a few weeks ago and came 8th. He just could not compete with the like of Denman and Kauto Star. Prior to that, i saw him run at Wincanton on Boxing day. The weather was appalling but he ran strong, jumped well and finished 7th.

He's used to running around a 3 to 3 and a half mile distance. the extra 3/4 of a mile tomorrow may be just what he needs to break through.

He's currently priced at 66/1 so your looking at 11/1 just for a place.

Another rank outsider i would consider would be 'Fundamentalist'. Won over hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival in 2004 and been a good servant to his yard. However, he got no farther than the third in this last year and does not look up to competing at this level any more. However, a fall from the favourites could see him slip into a place. Currently standing at 150/1. A good Irish Horse. Has form, not placed last time out but 3 previous races saw him come 5th each time. He could just do it.

Good luck.

Havent a clue what hubs backed but let you know later..... Good luck......... The only one i fancy in your selection is 'Comply or Die'.

Let's hope we don't see a repeat of 1967 when 28 horses were brought down.

Foinavon - Grand National Tales

It's why one of the fences is called 'Foinavon'.

How times change. One of my racing hero's is 'Sir Peter O' Sullivan' the greatest racing commentator ever.

I remember one race many years ago when he said 'We'll leave the winners enclosure now and we're going over to see the fallers being shot'.

He's 90 yrs old and the man is still a legend.:-4

We did see a repeat of 1967 as the winner is the only horse to come in at 100/1 as Foinavon did.

Just waiting for news on 'hear the echo' who has collapsed

Yesterday saw the death of 'Exotic Dancer' at Aintree as well as the 2008 winner of the Gold cup 'Denamn' nearly losing his life in a horrendous fall.

I have to go and get his wonderfullness some more income tax for a few hours but will come back to you.

I don't know why 'Knowhere's' jockey pulled him up, he was jumping strong. Butlers Cabin was there in the running but as i said earlier, a very difficult race to predict with the length, jumps and 40 horses together.

this is just bloody awful! Have you seen what fallen horses or unseated riders do in the race? They get up and carry on without a rider. WHY?

i think you are trying to say they enjoy the race?

they may thouroughly enjoy it,,, but i dont suppose its neccessary,, i mean it wouldnt be a great hardship for them not be entered in competitive racing, and in fact would definately not be harmful to them.

Just an opinion,,, i have enjoyed going to race meetings,,and the horses are very beautiful to look at and indeed to see racing,, so powerful and majestic.. I dont think it would be the end of my world if they stopped it,,,i mean ,, it is a sport for the enjoyment of people sometimes at the expense of the horse as in this case:-1

but i suppsoe there is a lot of things going on in the world that we allow even though its harmful and unneccessary,,, i also eat meat even though i know sometimes the animals are not looked after properly or killed humanely... a hypocrite?? yes i guess i am sometimes:thinking: I am sad such a beautiful creature has died,,, and yet i probably will go to a race meeting again one day:thinking:

I have a hard time with horse-racing when a horse dies and 'Exotic Dancers' death at Aintree yesterday was terrible. I have seen her run many times and felt i knew her.

Horse deaths in comparison to races run are relitively rare and especially since a change in regulations over height of fences and materials used.

The horses you see in The Grand National are 'Chasers'. They originate from fox-hunting. Often they are bred and used for fox-hunting before they go on to 'point to point' and then on to Steeple-chase racing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_to_p ... eplechase)

The amount of horse deaths in horse racing is an iota of horse deaths in fox-hunting where there are no regulations of height of jumps or materials.
