Saw this on TV, quite interesting. The thing is car companies don't seem able to think beyond short term profits often at the expense of their future. We have no car industry left because our car manufacturers thought people would always buy british even if it was rubbish.

This could be one answer to our transport problems

I think you might be surprised. This would appeal to the average person who only wants to go a short distance locally. Hence its 35mph max speed. It’s small enough to park in tight spaces. Ideal for shopping runs and cheap to run. I’m intrigued by its easy charging claims. Easy as charging a mobile phone apparently. Presumably you drive it into your utility room and plug it into the wall socket.

We’re a bit short on 110V domestic supplies over here though. That would be a problem.

The reason I don't think they will sell is because there are electric closed in golf carts that go just as fast and cost one third as much, plus, you must find roads with a max speed of 35 mph where the Peapod can be driven. That's almost impossible unless you live in the inner city. At $12,000+ USD I don't think it's much of a buy.

I can see Bubba trading in his Dodge Ram for a Peapod. :wah:

I wouldn't choose to drive anything called a peapod. :rolleyes: Besides, the design is atrocious and it doesn't look very safe. You'd better get back to the drawing board, Chrysler... before Obama takes control. :wah:

The inner city is exactly where it's designed to be used. It's hardly for the intercity run and I wouldn't want a vehicle like this for any speed over 50. However fuel efficient it is I wouldn't feel safe in it. I don't like the Smart cars on the motorways in the UK. They nip in and out of small gaps in the traffic queue the way gnats dart about in the air. Scary.

I agree that it looks tacky and they've a way to go to improve on it which they probably will in time as they get user feedback.

I don't know of any place in the US where golf carts could be used on public roads, but they would do just fine for inner city if it was legal.

In an electric car how do they provide heating? Never mind air conditioning and all that other crap you need a good heater. A decent electric heater will flatten the battery in no time. My first two cars didn't have proper heating you have no idea the thrill I still get at being able to turn up the heating. My current car has a four speed fan.

That's the one thing hat will stop them being successful in the UK-who wants a car with no heater?

They'll probably have to add on a little petrol driven engine to drive the heater
