Lately there have been so many alerts to the new scams being sent via emails.
Today, now one must always be weary of all unfamiliar emails, and not even click on them, or they can open a "trojan horse", a scam program that collects data from/on you! :guitarist
I now delete all unfamiliar emails, unfortunately probably some are really valid, but I'll never know!!
So be cautious, The latest scams mentioned are:

Along the same line I just heard about something called "fishing". It was on the news and I think I heard about one of the big computer outfits filing law suits.
Can anyone give me some details on what this is and is there any way to avoid it?

jahamaa Here is what "PHISHING" IS..!!
phishing Last modified: Friday, March 11, 2005
(fish´ing) (n.) The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. The Web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user’s information. For example, 2003 saw the proliferation of a phishing scam in which users received e-mails supposedly from eBay claiming that the user’s account was about to be suspended unless he clicked on the provided link and updated the credit card information that the genuine eBay already had. Because it is relatively simple to make a Web site look like a legitimate organizations site by mimicking the HTML code, the scam counted on people being tricked into thinking they were actually being contacted by eBay and were subsequently going to eBay’s site to update their account information. By spamming large groups of people, the “phisher†counted on the e-mail being read by a percentage of people who actually had listed credit card numbers with eBay legitimately.
Phishing, also referred to as brand spoofing or carding, is a variation on “fishing,†the idea being that bait is thrown out with the hopes that while most will ignore the bait, some will be tempted into biting.
Other forms: phish (v.)
Also see the All About Phishing page in the "Did You Know? section of Webopedia for more information, including examples, of phishing.

Got the Sun Trust one myself. Reported it but the real company didn't seem to want to do much about it?
There is another that I really liked and that was the won where I had won 160,000 dollars in a European lottery which I had been entered in by someone I know. All that was required for my winnng was that I supply them with my name address and which bank account that I wanted them to put my winning into. In order to prove who I was all I would have to do was send them a letter signed by me nd they would do the rest. Great scam if you're greedy and demand that they deposit your winnings real fast.
Don't have the stats but I would imagine that more than one person must have lost a few bucks.

I get one saying i have won a canadian lottery. Must admit I have little sympathy for those who fall for some of these, you know you haven't entered if you are that greedy and stupid to be taken in then tough luck.

Hello all, I also recieved a spam that says I've been selected to recieve some goods including a desktop computer and some household products for free. That all I needed do was fill a form and confirm the authorization. I hastily deleted the mail.
