OH isnt talking to me today!
Last night he went up for his shower and when he came down all shiney and clean he mentioned that the 'new'shampoo was a bit strong
...
What new shampoo?????:-2
The old fashioned stuff, the coal tar shampoo.. he told me.
What!!
See, Oscar our border collie tends to get a bit of dry flakey skin esp in the summer so I bathe him in coal tar shampoo it makes his coat shine and stops any itches..Its sold for use on ponies but its a natural product which can be used for dogs as well..
You guessed it OH picked up the dog shampoo and had a nice soapy shower with it.:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
I couldnt help myself I rolled about laughing 'didn't you read the label I asked him ?
No, because he didnt have his glasses on.
He made out the words coal tar shampoo but missed the next line 'for horses and ponies or the brand name Grand National or the picture of the jockey on a horse!!
Now he's accusing me of setting traps for him says he dare not take an asprin in case its really worming tablets..
Funny thing is about 8 yrs ago his mother did the same.. she went off for a shower and when she came back she mentioned how soft her hair was ..'its that nice shampoo youve got 'she said' I think it was called Puppy' !!!
Maybe its just a dodgy gene in his side of the family?

Kidding aside though, my daughter gets chronic eczema. She uses tube after tube of eczema cream from the doctor, which isn't healthy and which doesn't work! :-5
Is coal tar soap okay for people to use? She's starting college in September and she's worried people will tease her about her skin.

Where can I buy some?

A place called The Vermont Country Store sells a pine tar soap for skin problems. They have a website showing their many items. They have catalogs available, filled with all sorts of products, many seldom seen anymore. Coal tar products are available for human use here in the USA as well.

My husband used to use horse mane and tail shampoo. On purpose! We used to harrass him and ask him if he had a craving for oats. :wah: It was wonderful though. Made his coat, I mean hair, all soft and shiny. :wah:

I used Ajax on my hair once. I was a kid and went to a party as a 50's greaser.
The grease I used was Vaseline.
After 3 days of petroleum hair I was forced to break out the big gun.

You can get coal tar soap. I've got some of it - I like it. Not sure about the shampoo, though, but it's nice to hear first hand that it's good (as animals can't tell us)!

Wright's Coal Tar Soap. Not sure that it'll have any effect on eczema, though - a support forum might be able to contribute new ideas.

I know it's banned for human use in Canada, and Google tells me it's also banned by the EU and Japan.
I'd do some research on the stuff before using it, and then I'd only use it under a physician's care.
From bio.net :
February 23, 2001
LEADING SHAMPOOS CONTAIN
CARCINOGEN SAYS FDA
SAN FRANCISCO - A lawsuit against major shampoo manufacturers received a
boost this week when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that
coal tar, a common ingredient in many dandruff shampoos, is a carcinogen...
...One of the toxic components of coal tar -- Benzo[a]pyrene (BAP) is one of
the most potent carcinogens known. The concentration of BAP in a single
application of some coal tar shampoos is 470,000 times greater than the
amount in a cigarette...

Bless her, I can sympathise with her having battled with eczema all my life. She could try coal tar soap, it's generally available at any chemist. Maybe she should only use it in one place for a few days to test it out. Personally I found it hurt like crazy and made my skin raw and weep so please go carefully!
I really hope she can break the cycle of the steroid creams, it's hard though, especially when they don't really work.
Has she been tested for food allergies? That's when my breakthrough came, discovering I was allergic to wheat and gluten.
I don't think anyone realises how depressed the condition can make you feel and people staring in disgust doesn't help at all, it definately restricts your life.
Give her a big hug from me Rapunzel :yh_hugs
