In my dreams, I've cybered myself over to my beloved Donegal, Ireland to say hello to all of my FG friends here...Come and join me for a cuppa by the fireside...:wah: make believe it's winter...
Everyone up for a waltz now.....I've given directions below...Ducky and I will show you how to waltz...
Get up gents and ask the ladies to dance.....
I've put my blue dress on for this dance...Who's up for waltzing with me...
YouTube - Homes Of Donegal-Irish Song
The Homes Of Donegal (Sean Mc Bride/ arranged Paul Brady)
I've just dropped in to see you all
I'll only stay awhile
I want to hear how you're getting on
I want to hear you smile
I'm happy to be back again
And greet you big and small
For there's no place on earth just like
The homes of Donegal
I long to see your smiling children
Standing by the door
The kettle boiling on the hearth
As I walk up the floor
And then to see a welcome free
For travellers one and all
For your hearts are like your mountains
In the homes of Donegal
I'd like to stay along with you
And while away the night
With fairy lore and tales of yore
Beside the turf fire bright
And then to see laid out for me
A shake-down by the wall
For there's rest for weary wanderers
In the homes of Donegal
The time has come for me to go
And bid you all adieu
For the open highway calls me back
To do these things I do
But when I'm travelling far away
Your friendship I'll recall
And please God I'll soon return unto
The homes of Donegal

Gosh I wish I could go to Donegal. Instead, I have to hit the road here. I think it's called doing a runner. Sigh. Family stuff. Kathy - I'll be around tomorrow, I have a lot of stuff to fix quickly and it's all suddenly, but then I have to go under the radar for at least a fortnight. So if we don't catch up before then, I'll hope to catch up in a bit. :-4

Kathy, when you cyber yourself over there, do you do the thingy where you can actually stroll down the streets? My daughter just taught me that trick, so I can go up streets from my childhood, then move on to Pittsburgh, etc. It's fun!

Hey Zap and Pam,
Have you ever gone on google maps to find your homes? I was born in an inner city that was absolutely gorgeous growing up there. Unfortunately, it's gotten very dangerous and difficult to visit there.
But this will always be where my memories are. In fact, when I dream, they're always in my childhood home.
If you haven't been to this site, you can key in your address, and it will bring you to an interactive site that lets you move along all the streets by moving your curser.
It was so cool to see my old home. It still looks beautiful. I "walked" up and down my street.....and visited the pool, ice skating rink, shops, my grammar school and church, my high school and college and friend's homes.
I also found my brother's home and saw his car in the driveway.
I can't really see my home at the beach since it's only an ariel view, but I did see my car in the driveway.
I know that many people don't like this new technology, but I love it because I can visit my old haunts and my favorite places in Florida and South Carolina.
Just go to google.com... then google maps.....key in your address, and click on your street. You can use your curser to "walk" along your city streets.
Pam, I also found your street in C. but I didn't knock on any doors;) Think I also found Ducky's home....

Yes! That's the one I meant. I get it by going to Google maps. I can't get my present home because it's not in an incorporated area. But it is so much fun to see childhood homes, those of friends, etc..

I forgot to mention that it can be very dangerous to cyber something over to another place. I cybered some of my delicious, homemade bread, to OpenMind, and it nearly hit him in the head....It landed in his backyard like a speeding bullet:yh_rotfl

Grin. Yes, the Canberra one had my car parked outside, I remember. Where I am now is also on Google street search, and some scary views. This is yet another reason why I don't care that much about having an ID card. Already, our privacy is totally down les chiottes... grin. Lovely Oscar,
I really don't know Cork that well, but my cousin Liz who lives in Killarney travels to Cork all the time to destress. She loves, loves, loves Cork.
I spend most of my time in Donegal, Killarney, Spanish Point in Clare and the Dublin area...these are areas where my family live.

Oh yes Kate, Donegal is my wife’s favourite county. We have holidayed in Bundoran, and although it is not my favourite town there, it is the gateway to the drive up the hills through Glencolumkille which is absolutely breathe taking. Then on the North side of the county a friend has a holiday home up around Downings where I have been a few times. The drive up around the northern point of Donegal is gorgeous.

I have never been to Donegal!! sigh.. Would love to go there. Got as far as the top of Galway, but no further... sigh. My first Irish language teacher was the cultural attache to the Irish Embassy in Canberra and was from Donegal - we only had her for a few months, but I guarantee all of her students still have a slight Donegal burr.. beautiful accent. Harsh in one sense but lilting at the same time.

Patrick Kavanagh was from Co Monaghan, I think - but here, for you, Kathy, is my favourite poem of his:
Shancoduff
My black hills have never seen the sun rising,
Eternally they look north towards Armagh.
Lot's wife would not be salt if she had been
Incurious as my black hills that are happy
When dawn whitens Glassdrummond chapel.
My hills hoard the bright shillings of March
While the sun searches in every pocket.
They are my Alps and I have climbed the Matterhorn
With a sheaf of hay for three perishing calves
In the field under the Big Forth of Rocksavage.
The sleety winds fondle the rushy beards of Shancoduff
While the cattle-drovers sheltering in the Featherna Bush
Look up and say: "Who owns them hungry hills
That the water-hen and snipe must have forsaken?
A poet? Then by heavens he must be poor."
I hear, and is my heart not badly shaken?

Kathy !! What a special gift you've given me today... digging out that poem. One of my all time favourites. So atmospheric, and with that wry Irish humour. Dour, self deprecating, Northern humour, probably. LOVE IT. Thank you. Now I'm off to meet my sister for lunch - we probably won't see each other till after Christmas (our separate family rollercoasters are now gathering such momentum - grin. I head for Canberra via Goulburn on Sunday to collect D ). Hope all is going well in NJ!!!

Hello Sweet Pam:-4
I love your poem. Oh, it is so nice that you're meeting your red-haired sister for a lovely lunch...say hello to M and her snake for me:) Of course, you'll take some pics of D soon:-4
I pulled up this thread tonight as I was feeling nostalgic. Just received a DVD from my cousin Liz tonight of the last 4 weddings that I've missed in Ireland during the last few years:-1 It was so wonderful to see pics of my loved ones, but so sad that I couldn't be there...The kidlets are growing too fast, marrying and have babes of their own...and I don't know them yet:(
I just miss everyone so much but can't venture on yet:-1
So, I feel much better now that I can cyber over and then see YOU, my friend, here with me in Donegal:-4
