WOMEN are gradually becoming more attractive in an evolutionary "beauty race", according to scientific research.

Beautiful women have more children than their plainer counterparts and a higher proportion of those children are girls, a study claims.

These daughters, once adult, also tend to be attractive and so the pattern continues.

Men, meanwhile, remain as aesthetically unappealing as their caveman ancestors.

Examples of celebrity mothers with equally beautiful daughters who are models include Jerry Hall and her two daughters Elizabeth and Georgia Jagger, and Yasmin Le Bon and daughter Amber, who recently modelled swimwear.

This pattern has led to women becoming steadily more beautiful over the generations, say scientists.

In the research, Markus Jokela, from the University of Helsinki, used data from the US in which 1244 women and 997 men were followed through four decades of life.

Attractive women had 16 per cent more children and very attractive women 6 per cent more children than their less attractive counterparts.

Ummm question: Are we becoming more beautiful in respects of what beauty is considered to be in the 20th century? or are we actually becoming more beautiful?

I remember in history class at school (feminist teacher) we were told that beauty was considered based on the "health" of a woman around the 12th to 16th century . This included buxom large bossom, large hipped, and healthy hair.

Btw I'd just like to note I could have had more than three children if the ex hadn't have had the snip.............Just thought I should clarify that:D

As you suggest, the culture's ideal of beauty changes too rapidly for evolution to play a part.

On the other hand, sexual attractiveness is another matter and has been selected since our species began.

So what is sexual attractiveness? If men could help me out here I'd appreciate it. Some say it's asertiveness in women. Since the burning of the bra have we become more assertive?

Not blowing my own horn here but people say I have a natural sexiness. I look in the mirror and have no idea what they are on about . Even my father ( who I complained to once saying " I just wish they'd leave me alone" compared me to Marilyn Munroe, (not in looks, ) He said "some try to have it others are just born with it."

So what is IT?

If you could answer that question you'd be made for life.

Certainly there are beautiful women who are not in the least sexy and there are those who ooze sex appeal but are not beautiful but what separates them? I know not.

So what is IT? You are sexy Meggs, as i have seen pics of you.

I don't know....... as Bryn says, if we had the solutions, we'd be rich.

I myself fancy some very odd looking men. Their attractiveness to me is a variety of things. I like men who make me laugh, i like powerfull men, i like kind men..... such a variety.:confused:

There was a study I read some time ago concerning what people find attractive. They narrowed it down to things like cheekbones, shape of eyes, forehead, nose etc. Lots of minute details.

Sex appeal is much more difficult to pinpoint. Could be a walk or a slight feminine movement, a twinkle in the eye that makes you think, wow women are amazing !

Didn't beauty have a lot to do with carrying through several baby features?

My memory is failing - especially at this time in the morning.

Mmm not sure Bryn. There were some universal traits that were generally accepted as attractive by males and females.

It is called the 'X' factor. Some people just have it.

Oh bugger !!!

I only looked in this thread because I thought I would see some well filled jeans.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, certain features are seen to be beautiful by different cultures.

Africans like a fine derrier, and think nothing of buxom bosoms.
