I'd have gone for an informer too. I'm interested to hear what you've got.

The Oxford English Dictionary doesn't know it, all that's there is "A police agent or investigator concerned with narcotics" starting in the sixties.

What we need is a quote or two where it's used to refer to an Arrogant Narcissist.

i was talking on another forum and the person mentioned that his ex was a narc soooo i assumed it was a snitch or moody person and carried on the conversation in that manner it was only when he said what the hell are you talking about do you even know what a narc is that i twigged his meaning of narc differed from mine

i then wondered if it was a UK /USA thing but it appears that is not the case

Narc: (American) Narcotics agent

Narc: (British) Snitch, grass etc

That's my understanding. Is it now out of date?

Depends where you are does it not? If you're in the UK it is still in common parlance if you are in america they don't use the word the same way. They are speaking a different dialect from you called american english. Like their spelling it is different and only correct in an american context. Similarly with narc used in the sense of meaning a policeman on the narcotics squad. We refer to the drug squad.

Narcissistic or narcissism is a complete meaning on it's own- you don't need to add personality disorder to the word since it is in itself clear what it means. You are narcissistic is quite clear, you are suffering from narcissistic personality disorder sounds like a psychiatrist trying to pad his bill. A self obsessed individual is narcissistic, might need psychiatric help perhaps to sort themselves out but mentally ill?
