The drawers themselves are rather large - measuring 52 inches around the waist and obviously worn by Her Majesty in her later years when she had opted for comfort over fashion.

The bloomers were quite in demand, says Charles Hanson, the auctioneer in charge of the bidding.

"There was interest from all over the world.

"We had three or four Americans who were caught up in the romance of Queen Victoria, I think, and then there is a lady from Vancouver who has a great collection.

"She was the underbidder in this case, the higher bid came from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection."

In keeping with the time and the cumbersome outergarments, the bloomers have a split seam for ease of use.

They are made of fine linen chemise and are discreetly embroidered with a crown, the initial VR and a number so they could be kept track of when sent to the laundry.

Queen Victoria regalia is popular among royal collectors.

"We've sold quite a few items of hers," said Mr Hanson, "including a pair of black and white stockings for £8,000 - you can imagine they're popular here in Derby, being the same colour as the football team!

"It wasn't a football fan who bought them in the end, however. They're now in a museum in Nottingham."

What i'd like to know is - who had access to the queens nickers in the first place to sell them. Is nothing sacred
