Memories....

I was reminiscing of old times with friends and another story came to mind.
Years ago, when my late sisters little boy was a young, he loved animals with a passion. His Dad promised him that If he saved his pocket money hard and helped his mother round the house, he would build him a pigeon coup and get him some birds. He was 8 years old when the coup was finished and his Dad took him off to the market and bought 12 Pigeons for him. My little nephew was just so exicted the big day had come and he'd finally got his Pigeons even giving them all names on the way home.
Not being up to speed on these matters, his Dad did not realise that what he'd actually bought him was Homing Pigeons and what do Homing Pigeons do???? Yep... they bugger off home.
My little nephew got them home, put them in the coup, loving fed them that day and went to bed so excited that he'd wake up in the morning to feed his birds and guess what? He got up to find they had all cleared off back to the house where they had been raised.
Every morning for weeks and weeks, the first thing he'd do was get up in the morning and race to the window to see if his Pigeons had come home and my heart used to break for him every time.
It got to Christmas and I could stand to see him tears no longer so myself and his Dad set and bought 12 new Pigeons making sure they were not the homing variety. Late Christmas Eve when he was fast asleep in bed, we put the new Pigeons in the coup. I'll always remember his face when we woke him up Christmas morning and told him to look out the window and he saw what he thought was HIS pigeons that had come home to him for Christmas.
To this day.... he has no Idea ... or that I clipped the buggers wings so they couldn't fly off.
