Why is it that we currently have a thread up called 'What are you reading right now?', to which people are answering with high-brow recommendations. No-one is reading romances, no comic books read whilst seated on the 'throne', no car manuals or ghost stories or copies of yesterdays Sun newspaper. Not even any scary horror stories. Everyone who answers seems to be reading War and Peace or factual war novels or ecclesiastical works or something equally deep and meaningful.

So why is it that we then have a plethora of threads asking 'Whats in your fridge?', 'What did you have for dinner?', 'What did you eat for lunch?', 'What was the last thing in your mouth?', 'What fruit did you eat today?'

At least the butter thread was interesting!

How can so many "intellectuals" be so interested in such garbage?

I'm sorry if you enjoy these threads, but do we have to have SO many of them?

What happened to all the interesting discussions we used to have on FG?

What happened to all the fun?

Why is it that interesting threads get about 3 replies but these ones have lists of replies which, if printed, would probably be longer than the Great Wall of China! :-5

Please, for goodness sake, can people PLEASE introduce something a bit more interesting than this?

Cos if not, I'm going to start a POOP thread on where digested food goes and give graphic details and stomach-churning pictures that will put you right off your blinking lunch / dinner / fruit / fridge / mouth!

Arrrrgggghhhhhhhh!!! :-5 :-5 :-5 :p

When it comes to books I don't have time to read anything other than what is on one of my four current reading lists. So everything I'm reading right now is based on literature.

Some of it is really fun though and quite eye opening, I've been amazed at the amount of words bandied around today, that I thought were new inventions, that have literally been around for centuries.

I don't buy newspapers, haven't done for years. Actually I often avoid the news completely, too much doom and gloom.

I actually think people are too scared to hold too many opinions and voice them now, things get personal here really quick, even when there is no personal intention meant.

If I'm not learning something- it's strictly romance, mystery, or harry potterish(have to stay on top of things with the 10 year old, don't ya know? lol).

I just bought two lori fosters I'd somehow missed along the way and two erin mccarthy. You can barely walk into my bathroom because of the books.

I'll only read comedy romances and good guy wins mysteries. Same as i do movies. I am not at all entertained by anyones misery except a guy who is clearly bad and I'm not about to pay to see the misery in my mind or on the screen.

Real life has always been miserable enough, thank you very much and the stuff i read to learn crap for my job is dry enough to last anyone a lifetime. My theory is that the reason my authors hit lists... the intellectuals are secretly reading them too, just can't admit to the guilty pleasure..:p

As for interesting threads - I wouldn't recognize one if it bit me in the butt, quite obviously. Sometimes I think I take special pleasure in seeing how many threads I can string together without getting a reply..:wah:

On the up side, I've been trying to avoid posting near folks that I make twitch, so I've been spending more time in the arcade lately.:D

I hope I don't make you twitch. :sneaky: :lips: :wah:

You are one of the few whose posts I thoroughly enjoy reading.

You obviously spend far too much time deleting spam and having fun in the arcade when you should be here, sharing your dry wit with those who appreciate it!

I read a lot of the same stuff you read. (Have you tried Charlie Bone? Very similar to Harry Potter but actually written BEFORE the HP novels appeared on the scene.)

I know what you mean about lots of threads but no replies, but don't let it stop you.

(Rap grabs Floppy's hand as she walks towards the arcade. Rap tries to pull her back but Floppy keeps moving. Rap now has her feet locked against the door jamb trying desperately to pull Floppy back into the room. Floppy hears a distant voice cry out "Weeee neeeeeeed youuuuuuuu" as she sits on a nice comfortable stool and starts to feed coins into a slot machine . . .)

Odie, I'm not having a dig at you, please don't think that. :)

Yes we liked the butter thread and yes people like the foodie threads.

But its all becoming much of a sameness.

Isn't there other stuff we can post as well?

Not everyone is going to like everything but it would be more of a balanced diet.

Too much of the same thing is no good for anyone.

And, no, posting jokes isn't intellectual, it was for fun and I was playing to an audience. No one really gets the intellectual jokes.

For instance:

Where's the soap?

Yes, it does, doesn't it.

That cracks me up every time.

But most people just don't get it.

Likewise:

Time flies like an arrow.

Fruit flies like a banana.

That also cracks me up.

But how many other people laughed?

Here's another (it's a lame french Knock, Knock joke, but I liked it):

Frappe, frappe (sp?)

Qui est la?

Lostie.

Lostie qui?

Yes.

I'm sorry if I came across as a rabid mongrel yesterday. :o

I broke a tooth yesterday and was in dire agony all day (and that was WITH a ton of painkillers)

Today is even worse and the dentist can't see me until 3:40pm (bastard!) so I'm sitting here downing nurofen like smarties and willing the clock to tick faster! :(

OMG . . . you angel! :yh_angel

I've got some co-codamol tablets the dr gave me a few months ago when I wrenched my arm and couldn't sleep for the pain! She said take two every 4 hours but they knocked me out totally so I just took one before bedtime for a few days. I should have about 70 of the damn things left. I'd forgotten all about them!

Ok, so I just swallowed 2 co-codamol and then read the instruction which said: DO NOT TAKE WITH ANY OTHER PARACETAMOL!

OOPS! :o

Oh well! *shrugs*

Yesterday my tooth hurt like buggery, today the whole right side of my face aches, head, ear and jaw!

Infection? Me? :wah:

Roll on dentist time - it'll soon be 2:30!

(Tooth hurty! :D) Lol!

How is it possible to make jokes when you're in pain?

Anything to take your mind off it, I guess.

Glad you liked the other jokes too, BB. :D:wah:

Awww ooowww double owww it's that sort of pain that hurts from the top of the head right down to the shoulder and makes you feel like smashing your head against a wall just to feel another type of pain, as any other pain has to be better. Keep dosed up girl, if it's an infection you are going to have another 48 hours in pain waiting for the anti-biotics to work. I had a tooth out the other week and was in agony as the socket was infected, it was pure agony so I feel for you.

Actually, that co-codamel is kicking in and I'm starting to feel allwoozy . . . .

Tbh I think the tooth is quite badly cracked and I'm going to ask him to take the whole tooth out. The exact same thing happened about 12 years ago to the same tooth on the other side. I had only just moved down from London and didn't have a dentist yet so I went to the emergency dentist at the local hospital.

The chinese lady dentist spent ages tryingto fill it and I was in the worlds WORST agony! In the end I just had to stop her and say 'just pull the bloody thing out' which she did with LOTS more pain! When I came out I was shaking so much I could barely stand. And YES then the socket got infected and the pain lasted for ages. I dont think I'll EVER forget that was my WORSY ever nightmare dentist visit!

So I'm DREADING todays visit but hoping he can do something to ease the pain.

Although these cocodomel can't spell it now are really beginning to work well :wah:

They shouldn't pull it if you have any chance of having an infection, the infection needs to be cleared first.

Aw thanks you guys! It has done wonders for my confidence. I never smiled in photos, and I would cover my mouth in public when I laughed. People smile back at me now! My face was still swollen when that pic was taken. My profile pic is me now. 1 year on. I do not remember a thing about having it done though. Sedation is gorgeous! I feel it gives me more credibility with my patients, if I look like i practice what I preach.

I know you guys will be interested in the results. Mine was an Indian dentist. He was brilliant. I dont remember a thing.

Wow! That's amazing! And you have a gorgeous smile! :)

Did you have all your teeth capped then?

I wonder how much that would cost now?

It is your thread, Rapunzel. And a good thread too. I'm out of kilter with time zones. Have you seen the dentist yet?

Hiya Odie, sorry about that hunni :o

I wrote half an answer yesterday but got so tired from the overdose of painkillers that I went to bed instead. Let me wake up a bit more and I'll get back to you. :)

Rapunzel;1248986 wrote: Why is it that we currently have a thread up called 'What are you reading right now?', to which people are answering with high-brow recommendations.

So what's the main problem here? Are you calling bull**** or do you just want to see more "real" everyday discussion?

I'm usually guilty of reading all that "high brow" literature, but... lately I've been reading as much of the best mainstream fiction that I can get my hands on, as I'm researching about writing a mainstream novel. So now I'm reading all of those great mainstream writers like Clavell, King, DeMille, Chandler... in fact, I just now got another shipment from Amazon that I haven't even opened and more on the way... I'll be reading a LOT of bestselling titles that I'm sure you will enjoy, over the next few months. :D

Regarding genre novels... mystery, gothic romances, science fiction, vampire tales... I never really cared for any of that crap. :p

Maybe not, but the memory of the pain is still fresh for me!

Hey Rapunzel has it eased yet?
