The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2009 has been shared by Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak

"for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase"

"Three Americans won the Nobel prize in medicine on Monday for discovering how chromosomes protect themselves as cells divide, work that has inspired experimental cancer therapies and may offer insights into aging."

All three researchers are currently working in America. But Prof Szostak is a Brit by birth and Elizabeth Blackburn was born in Australia. Austrlians have won a few Nobel prizes in physiology medicine. This though is our first woman Nobel Laureate.
