Results don't matter, just a good effort gets you recognized and rewarded. What a message we send to our children and how we demean the true achievers.

Did Obama deserve the Nobel prize that placed him on par with Mother Theresa and others who spent a lifetime working for peace and other worthy causes? :o

I think not, Nobel Prize for Effort.

He'd have done better to have declined it. It was a very silly decision on the part of the committee.

I can kind of understand why though. I think the rest of the world was holding it's breathe to see who won that election. If it had been McCain and more of the same right wing militaristic foreign policy you'd have seen the nato nations seriously beginning to distance themselves from america and russia and china getting ready for war. It's jthe relief that bush is gone and the neocons have lost theor influence.

'Humbled' Obama awarded Nobel Peace Prize - Americas, World - The Independent

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.

What did mother theresa ever do for world peace?

And what did Obama do?

All Presidents take office and begin serving on January 20th. The (Norwegian) Nobel Committee Prize website relates that the committee must receive nominations for the prize postmarked no later than February 1st of each year.

So...they are trying to tell the world that this loser strengthened Intl diplomacy and cooperation in 12 days time? Simply amazing! And he never even left the country in those first 12 days either.

I think you all can see through the smoke and mirrors and what a crock of bullsh!t this is.

I can't say she did much for world peace, but at least she did something.

He should never have been awarded it. The nominations had to be in by Feb and he only got elected two weeks earlier.

Wait until he's put the extra 40,000 US troops into Afghan and 5,000 of them have come home in body bags.

Gordon Brown has done more for peace in the ME than Obama has anywhere............ so far.

Mother Teresa saved many lives through her work. It was a small part of the world, but it was very meaningful.

What??

She may, arguably, have saved many souls from hell, but I can't think she saved any lives. She wasn't in the business of saving lives. Hospitals save lives. She cared for the dying.

She took care of the sick, the dying, the unwanted ones. That is saving a life in the physical sense, as well the spiritual one. She was worthy of a peace prize, for her ministry.

How is that saving a life in the physical sense? I'm sure we just have a problem of wording here but I honestly don't see your equation. How does taking care of the sick, the dying, the unwanted ones save a life?

Here's a quote from her: "We have a home for the dying in Calcutta, where we have picked up more than 36,000 people only from the streets of Calcutta, and out of that big number more than 18,000 have died a beautiful death. They have just gone home to God".

Someone in my family suggested that the Peace Prize seemed to be awarded sometimes for the idea of something, more than any actual act. Maybe both Mother Teresa and President Obama have given hope of a better world.

Americans might consider that world opinion is paying their country a compliment, and take this award as an honour, a vote of confidence in the future.

He got elected-the first black American president and also the first president in ages that hasn't been banging a war drum and pissing off all his country's allies. A

It's a back handed compliment to americans as a nation more than it is to obama why don't you see it that way? You're very quick to be touchy about perceived insults to the president seemingly taking that as an insult to america as a nation and think anyone criticising your foreign policy is anti American why not take a compliment for a change.

I don't think you quite understand the horror with which bush was viewed in the rest of the world. An america that thinks everything can be resolved by force of arms, constantly threatens military action and turns it's back on international law unless it happens to suit is rather worrying. What happens IN America doesn't really concern anyone else but your foreign policy does.

He got elected-. It's beginning to look like his election was bought with the help of ACORN.

And what the hell kind of back handed comment was it when Jimmy Carter and Al (give me a break) Gore won?

Our foreign policy? We learned from you guys. I had a boss tell me once that she didn't get to be boss by being nice. When England was a top dog on the heap, they weren't so nice. Now that England is on a lower rung of the ladder, they want 'nice'.

International law? Just more UN bullsh!t.

International law covers trade agreements as well. If you won't respect it then why should any nation bother trading with you? For instance perhaps China should just continue pinching all your patents then without worrying about international law-if you don't respect it why should they?

When England was a top dog on the heap, they weren't so nice.

At least everybody now talks to each other in a common language that was a nice thing to do was it not?

You know, the Nobel peace Prize Committee can't stop a nomination being made, you can't really blame them for those.

Joseph Stalin, the Secretary General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922-1953), was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 and 1948 for his efforts to end World War II and to my mind ought to have been awarded it.

Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939 by E.G.C. Brandt, Member of the Swedish parliament. By all means criticize Mr Brandt for bad judgement but not the Committee.
