Instead of laying out a big OP on what "shock doctrine" tactics are used by government and creating a thesis for debate, I thought it would be more interesting to brainstorm as a group.

What fears, real or imagined, do you think political leaders/parties play into?

I'll start the list.

Fear of the economy crashing.

Additional to a list of fears, how many of these threats do you believe exist?

Fear of the decline of society's "moral fabric"

Good question, I guess there's a little fear of all those things around. Most of it irrational or based on misinformation or sheer ignorance.

Hitler showed very clearly just how powerful a weapon fear could be. The German people were steeped in religion, technologically proficient, and millennia-civilized. If they could go straight to Hell because of fear, any society can.

Let's add:

Fear of another political party

Fear of loss of nationalistic identity.

Fear of immigration. (OK, that might be fear of minorities too.)

Fear of religious groups. (I'm not quite sure what I meant by that. maybe I was thinking of Islamic fear of Israelis.)

Oh.. I forgot!

Fear of Nuclear War! (Yeah, I used to "duck and cover" and it was NOT good for me.)
