If you've got it don't flaunt it, US Marine tells Aussie women

* US Marine criticises Aussie dress standards
* Says: "Leave something to imagination"
* Top End women not impressed
A US Marine Captain has attacked the dress standards of Australian women after a night on the town in Darwin.
Capt John Campbell said the city's women wore too little to attract "nice men" after he spent a night out on Mitchell St, The Northern Territory News reports.
"It's about having standards, ladies," he wrote.
"What are standards? Well, it can begin by dressing in a manner that leaves something to the imagination, to say the least."
The captain's letter to the editor was published in the Northern Territory News yesterday.
It raised eyebrows among many Darwin women, including nightclub dancer Lana Sandic, 19.
"He's got some guts to say that," she said. "Most Territory girls would say 'Put it where the sun doesn't shine'."
But Capt Campbell was adamant. "Ladies have been conned into thinking that just because you have it means you should flaunt it," he wrote.
"Come on ladies, don't send us mixed messages. That's what you do every time you dress with less than nothing on."
Now, before I get to the words he's used and the insult . I would like to know what kind of person (a visitor to the country) would go out of their way to write to a newspaper to insult that country's women? Who does that? Is he wanting to be shipped back home or something?
I cannot believe they let this idiot into the country in the first place!!!
Has he not been able to handle the heat and gone 'troppoe'?
So apparently in the heat of Darwin women are sending mixed messages? who is he to tell us how and what to dress in? Who the hell tells any woman how to dress.
I want to abuse this person but even I'm lost for words.
The audacity!!!

I'm enjoying reading the comments
Mixed messages? Kind of like when you imprison people indefinitely without charge whilst claiming you're bringing them "freedom" The message a short skirt conveys to most people is 'it's damn hot in Darwin', not wanting to talk to/flirt with/sleep with a neanderthal does not contradict that in anyway. Got to be a candidate for tool of the year and we've only just cracked January.

Whilst I cannot disagree with the captain I think it is very much a case of 'the pot calling the kettle black'. Our diminishing standards in just about everything ie trashy dressing standards, foul mouthed movies, junk foods, exhorbitant executive incomes, manufactured foul mouthed pop music etc generally emanate out of the US. We buy it and think it's the norm. It isn't!

I'm in total agreement!! Why should a "good time" include sex? Why can't foreign men visiting Australia (like US servicemen) just have a chat and a cup of coffee instead of temptation/seduction thrown at them?

Not surprising really as the Americans are utterly convinced they can teach every other country and culture in the world the right way to do everything. Get a life soldier and keep your opinions to yourself or, as the Brits coined back in WW11, ¿go home yank¿

CQSteve of Rockhampton: Last time I checked, we were equally responsible for making Paris Hilton a celebrity. Australians buy magazines with her face on the cover, watch reality TV shows she stars in, buy her clothes, cosmetics and accessoriesand purchase products she endorses. As for the U.S. officer's comments, he's entitled to them. I'm sure he's going to get a kick in the backside once he's State-side though.

YEAH YEAH YEAH what women wear is ALL about you men isn't it? It's summer in Darwin. Could you consider for a minute the possibility that what they are wearing has nothing to do with YOU and your HUGEEEEE ego as a male. Could your tiny brain comprehend that they don't want to get heat stroke and want to dress for the hot and humid whether? Wearing a skimpy dress when it's really hot and humid is a smart move to keep cool, it is not a personal invitation to you or any other man. GET OVER YOURSELVES MEN.

So who cares what these girls wear? If they're having a good time and not hurting anyone so what? It's none of anyone's business what anyone wears as long as they are not breaking any laws. If the guy can't keep his eyes and hands to himself he should look at his own standards and behaviour instead of blaming anyone else. Why should women be dictated about what they should or shouldn't wear by men like it was in the middle ages. If you've got it flaunt it I say. P.S I work at a mine and wear long pants and hi-vis orange long sleeve shirts all day and to the pub after work and believe me covering up doesn't stop the blokes from being sleazes. Maybe we should all wear burquas?

I agree with him and so do most people I know. Most blokes go out in trousers sleeved shirts and yet gils wear short shorts and halter-neck tops and consequently bare their midrif and thighs. What's with that?

This is a smart and very well travelled guy. I think he has a darn good point. There are so many Aussie skanks around, no wonder why all the Aussie bloke target foreign chicks these days. They are sick of the beer guzzeling butch chicks who and try and wear less thinking it will attract men (even when they are too big for the items as well. Melb Cup day is a great example of this...

Met plenty of Marines and they represent every demographic so this guy's opinion is his alone and not indicative of the entire Corps. Darwin has a reputation and I'm sure most of his enlisted subordinates look forward to shore leave there for that very reason.

I would suggest that this is not a story about fashion sense or 'flashy' gear, but more about an American visitor having a go at our girls. I know this is sad, but I would rather take on an opinion from a Swede, a Canadian, a Belgian, a Peruvian or a Cypriot because to me, it would seem more less patronising.

Fuzz - this sailor went out on the town in Darwin in summer for one night. He was probably in the red light district, and it looks like the girls in their working clothes didn't like the look of him and gave him a thumbs down. So as he drank himself into solitary oblivion - probably getting louder and uglier as the morning approached - then he thought he'd diss all of Aussie womanhood and we'd all be sorry.
Are you sorry? I'm not!

I'm just amazed that someone would go to another country and do that .....Anyone ...any country.. Send him home me thinks. Or give him a guard where ever he goes so the poor little lads senses aren't shocked further. does he honestly believe though that women dress like that for one reason only?
Heck if i had to spend one day in Dawins summer heat i'd be walking around naked.

I can't understand why one bloke should upset you so much, Fuzzy. I mean it must have been a very slow news day.
I had turned off the computer and was about to hit the hay when I had another thought.
What if this bloke was a good, pure, virginal, young Southern baptist boy of limited life experience and his first time ashore in a foreign country he lands up in the rough port end of town? There he is, looking for a cup of tea and some Bible study - and not a Sunday School teacher in sight. He has probably never even seen cleavage before, let alone a working girl with legs that go all the way up offering him her wares. Nobody may ever have told him about birds and bees etc. He probably got his first ever hard on and is a mass of guilt and self disgust. He has probably been traumatised for life.

YouTube - Muirsheen Durkin (1968)
All that merkin talk got me singing this great Irish song all over brekkie, and I'll be bawling it out all day now..
Muirsheen Durkin
In the days I went a-courtin´
I was never tired resortin´
To the alehouse and the playhouse
and many´s the house beside
But I told me brother Seamus
I´d be off and be right famous
And when I return again
I roamed the world wide
I courted girls in Blarney
in Kanturk and Killarney
In Passage and in Queenstown
that is the cove of Cork
But I´m sick of all this treasure
I´m gone and make me leisure
And the next time that you hear from me
will be a letter from New York
Goodbye to all the girls at home
I´m sailing far across the foam
To good old Paddy Mincoln and to Americay
There´s gold and jewels in plenty
for the poor and for the gentry
And the next time I´ll return again
I´ll never more will say
So, Good Bye Murshin Durkin
I´m sick and tired of workin´
No more I´ll dig the praties
and no longer I´ll be fooled
But as sure my name is Carney
I´ll be off to Californy
And instead of digging praties
I´ll be digging lumps of gold

He's making a moral judgement about the ladies of darwin based on nothing else except their appearance and his own preconceptions. Sure he has a right to express his opinion but he seems to think his own moral standards are superior to everybody else's which rather suggests he is an arrogant pillock.
Besides-who does more harm-a scantily dressed woman or a trained killer who does what he is told? However you want to dress it up (no pun intended) a soldier in uniform has made a conscious decision to be a killer so does he really speak from a higher moral ground?
