While people all over the world are marking the 75th anniversary of the birth of Elvis Presley, I would like to give a big shout out to a treasure who is still with us -University of Cambridge professor emeritus Stephen Hawking, who turned 68 years old yesterday. Professor Stephen W. Hawking

A Science Odyssey: People and Discoveries: Stephen Hawking

Born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death, Hawking is a theoretical physicist who only retired from Cambridge last fall. He has published numerous papers and books on the nature and origin of the universe, the best known being A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes. Hawking also had a miniseries on PBS in 1997, Stephen Hawking's Universe, as well as a long list of TV and movie appearances. He is renowned for making difficult concepts comprehensible to the average reader or viewer.

If you're serious about wanting to read about quarks and quantum physics, you should read any of the books by Russell Stannard as he writes in a clear and fascinating manner about them.

I would recommend all of the following:

Uncle Albert and the Quantum Quest

The Time and Space of Uncle Albert

Black Holes and Uncle Albert

Russell Stannard is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the Open University.

Question: Has the new "String Theory" featuring 11th dimensional physics overshadowed Stephen's work?

I read "A Short History of Time and Space." Fascinating stuff. Go Stephen!:D
