The green fairy has arrived in Sydney (well, officially now :sneaky:). The Absinthe Salon has opened and it's only really a hop and a skip (or possibly a short fluttering of wings) away from me.
Absinthe Salon – Surry Hills | Sydney Bar Zine
Okie took me years ago (where are you, Okie???) to the New Orleans Old Absinthe House in the Rue Bourbon
The Old Absinthe House ~ Rue Bourbon
and I stumbled upon the Paris Vert d'Absinthe, in the Marais area last year with my son.
Vert d'Absinthe: Absinthe in Paris - David Lebovitz
I'm not that keen on actual absinthe - but the idea of it is wonderful... Absinthe evokes the Belle Epoch in Paris - the bistro and café life, the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre; the art nouveau - impressionism, Van Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec, Monet, Manet, Picasso, Braque; the writers of the day - Verlaine, Rimbaud, Hemingway, Oscar Wilde!!!

It became illegal everywhere, I think, Abbey.. some chemical in the wormwood was not only halucinogenic (?has that got two l's??) but allegedly caused madnesssss... hence the allusion elsewhere to Van Gogh possibly dis-earing himself ..
Anyway - the modern version is apparently brewed without that special something. So you get the kick without the kick. Seems like a cop out really.
And I did drink absinthe in the United States relatively recently.
(I understand the adulterated version is still made in Europe - but then you can get anything anywhere if you have the money and the knowhow.. :sneaky:)

I decided to be discreet about displaying the complete name of this noble forum with the actual absinthe, Kathy. Or..... Effigy was so out of it by the time he'd inhaled the wispy green miasma.. that his words blurred...
Anis, pastis, ouzo... not bad... but ABSINTHE is nectar of the goddess...:sneaky:

Absent light... absinthe light
Ahhh Benjamin Biolay's fantastic song "Novembre Toute L'année"
It's November all year round, so evocative...
Dailymotion - Benjamin Biolay - Novembre toute l'année - une vidéo Musique
----------------------

He's not actually sipping it but the implication is there. I hope this works:
Amazon.com: Johnny Depp (Bathtub) Poster Print, 35x24: Kitchen & Dining
Think I'll go take a bubble bath now.

I believe they still make absinthe with the wormwood hallucinogen in Israel and the Czech Republic. I do believe the real stuff is technically illegal in many countries, but I've heard of absinthe parties around here that featured real Czech absinthe.

Clodders - the first read of the year for my book club is Margaret Atwood's "Year of the Flood" - It's quite weird. The Greenie religious cult folk are called God's Gardeners...

I have seen you
Thou fair Greenie
Your lithe form
Around the bottle
But stay away
From my dear Johnny
Lest your chartreuse throat
My hands shall throttle!

O Zappie I would like to clap you
Your rhymes are great. Who'd ever slap you
For merely threatening to throttle
A green poledancer on a bottle
Who'd never smile at your dear Johnny
Although he's verrra braw and bonnie
Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder
But languor licks the lust to wander.

I tried it once.
All I can say is to try it when you are with people you trust.

I drank a glass or two with some friends down in Saint Raphael in the south of France, Fuzzy. I do recall noting some time afterwards that there were sea serpents crawling along the ceiling of my room.
