Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln were busy beavers. It seems these guys just could not sit still, but then again there was so much to discover back in their day. The following is an entertaining article on the three tech minded presidents.

Wired.com marks Presidents Day weekend with brief vignettes of three of our techiest presidents: Washington steered national policy toward an embrace of science, Jefferson made a significant contribution to paleontology, and Lincoln devised and patented a gimmick for lifting stranded boats.
I'm fond of the following;

Despite all this, and despite his position on the board that oversaw the first U.S. patent law, Jefferson held no patents himself. He was an open source kind of guy and believed it necessary for inventors to be rewarded, but distrusted a system that could be abused to keep needed innovations from reaching public use.

I suppose Kennedy could be included due to his dedication to space flight.
