A strange and sad night....

The roaring noise of a 'humongous' helicopter outside my window last night woke me up and scared the bejeezers out of me at 12:00 A.M. this morning.

I ran outside to see the helicopter hovering above my driveway and thought it was going to crash into my home. It made a quick turn and landed across the street in a field near a boat marina.

At the same time there must have been 60 police cars, ambulances and other cars with sirens blaring surrounding the marina.

I didn't know what happened until lunchtime today as no statesments were made by the police until then.

Seems that there was a couple who drove into the empty marina and their car plunged into 8 ft. of water in the bay. They were found dead when pulled out of the bay. Don't have anymore details as the investigation is ongoing.

Police reported that there were no signs of braking, and the car would have had to drive off the road and into the marina to get into the water.

Speculation in town is that it may be a suicide.....It's very sad to hear of this tragedy. I didn't sleep for most of the night knowing that something awful had happened.

I feel so sorry for this couple if they did commit suicide as they must have lost all hope. I especially feel sorry for the families of the couple.

I'll update if I hear anything more concrete for anyone interested.

Yes please, it certainly sounds like a case of desperation and it would be good to know the background - what makes a couple feel that this is the only way out?

The story in the Star Ledger doesn't say anything more.

Car plunges into Barnegat Bay killing two Ocean County residents

By MaryAnn Spoto/The Star-Ledger

March 17, 2010, 8:33PM

SEASIDE PARK — Two Ocean County residents were killed today after their car plunged into Barnegat Bay in Seaside Park.

Authorities are trying to determine how the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Sharon Stankard, 41, of the Whiting section of Manchester, ended up submerged in nearly eight feet of water.

The accident occurred at midnight, prompting several residents to call 911 and report hearing what sounded like an explosion in the area of J Street, said Seaside Park police officer Stephen Shadiack.

When police arrived two minutes later, they found a car submerged in the bay at the Berkeley Harbor Marina at the end of J Street on the bay, Shadiack said.

The borough fire department’s SCUBA unit pulled Stankard and her passenger, Ralph Edward Wetmore Jr., 47, of Toms River, from the vehicle within minutes, Shadiack said.

They were rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River where they were pronounced dead, he said.

Shadiack said police did not immediately know why Stankard and Wetmore were in the area and how the car ended up in the water. He said there were no signs of braking and no skid marks.

‘‘It’s like they made a straight run from the roadway into the bay,’’ Shadiack said.

Very sad story and it must have been very scary for you Kathy Ellen. I'm wondering since it was St. Patty's Day if the driver might have been intoxicated and drove into the water not knowing where she was :-3

Very Sad KE, hope it turns out it really was an accident! Suicide is usually spured on by hopelessness beyond all coping. Unless, suicide could be understandable if they both were "terminally" ill, and in dire pain!

Human tragedies like this make us sad indeed. They also make us count our blessings.
