The children came home with a note about this event yesterday, I'm looking around the house wondering where the candles are and bemused that sadly within ten minutes the novelty will wear off. Oh well it will be educational for them.

And the strange thing, Betty - is that all the candles people light give off much more whatever it is we're trying not to give off than if we'd just turned on a couple of lights. Still, I suppose it's kind of symbolic..

Sydney had Earth Hour last night. I was at a concert in the Opera House at the time, and was sitting in the dark anyway. At interval we went outside and there was a 2/3 full moon, eerily reflected on the white sails. In the Botanic Gardens bats were flying overhead, and some of the city skyscrapers, unlit, looked like futuristic gothic castles in the greenish haze. Neat!!

Just to show willing, I'm sitting here with just light from my laptop screen, a torch beside me so I can see my way to the loo :wah: The dog thinks we're mad, but sleeps on :rolleyes: The low watsit bulbs normally lighting up the hall and the stairs are extinguished till 9.30. I have, however, left on the security light over the front door (outside).

There's nowt interesting on the TV, so that isn't on anyway. It just looks a bit weird. I won't bother with candles, not for one hour.

I fitted enviromentally friendly light bulbs all over the house only to have to turn lamps on to avoid stumbling around In semi-darkness.

Our bulbs for the stairs and the hallway are 11w but kick out the equivalent of 60w, and most of the other bulbs in the house are the same. They light just as brightly as the old type 60w bulbs. No semi-darkness for us !

We couldn't see the moon but we did glimpse some stars in between the clouds. The children wanted to observe it so I thought it would be amusing to see how long it took for the first 'I'm bored' :wah:. It didn't come though, son sorted through some Yu-gi-oh cards and daughter bent my ear for a solid hour, they wouldn't go to bed until the lights came on again as they were too scared :rolleyes:. I even found myself uttering the words 'When I was a girl....' aagghhhh. It was fun

I saw Sydney on the news last night as they were the first to shut off their lights at 8:30, I'm doing the same tonight.

20% of energy was saved last year alone in Canada!
