My brother is a recorder for a local conservation trust. Today whilst out walking with him my daughter found a caterpillar, my brother must have found it of interest because he put it in a pot with some leaves and let my daughter bring it home to pupate. My daughter then took it to show her friends as soon as we got in, minutes later I'm confronted by an upset child because one of the other children took it away from her and threw it in the bin saying it was dead!!

It's only a caterpillar at the end of the day, but what gives this other child the right to throw it away! :-5 Do parents just not teach children respect for other peoples belongings, no matter how small or insignificant it seems to them, obviously not.

omg Betty, that is just so sad for a kid to do such a horrible thing.

Did you attempt a rescue? Don't tke the other kids word for it that it was dead!

It wasn't dead, it was about to pupate. I've looked in the bin but it's brim full of stinking rubbish and it can't be seen at the moment.

Somehow I feel there is a purvey gloves moment about to happen, before it gets too dark, or the bin gets more stuff thrown in it! Hard lines BB, I think you've drawn the short straw! But just think how much higher up the respect ladder you will be in the young one's eyes, when you present her with a rescued caterpillar! It's worth a try, even if you don't succeed in finding the wee thing, at least you will have tried! :-6 Either that, or go out and find another caterpillar !

Kids can be so wicked can't they? Spoilt jealous little madams if you ask me.

It's not just today's kids. A friend of mine just had an experience similar to that and the villains were 27 and 39. The ensuing conversation was about how many people have no understanding of how to treat other people's belongings. As far as I know, it's a problem that spans every generation.

In this case, it's not just someone's belongings but the life of another creature. I think it's a good lesson in guarding your possessions and being cautious who you entrust with them but there's also the problem of your daughter thinking of the little caterpillar alive but trapped in the dumpster. I'm not big on lying to kids but I'd be tempted to feign a search and rescue then tell her that you found it but it was dead by the time you got there. The other option would be to get her a new one and tell her it was the original. Meanwhile, the kid who snatched it should be dubbed "caterpillar killer" for at least a week.

Someone else's, had it been mine I would have found Chloe the caterpillar and re-instated her in her home. My bin contains rubbish that is bagged and is fairly clean for a bin. The one down the road where Chloe is, is full of loose kitchen waste . I did get quite attached to Chloe through the day, but not THAT attached!!

I'm not surprised you didn't go through someone else's bin...yuk! It doesn't bear thinking about.

If you get a replacement chrysalis from Bristol Zoo's Butterfly House you could end up with an immense butterfly capable of drinking an entire cup of nectar at a sitting and more vibrant colours than Davie Bowie. It could fly around the house for weeks terrorizing any visitor who still sports a beehive hairdo.

It might be difficult to convince your brother it was the original caterpillar, mind.

There's good news, Chloe is home. The culprit dug down in the bin and got her out and he even came and apologised! And there was me thinking that one of his parents would be banging on my door to shout at me for ticking him off :wah:. Seems little old me must have scared him into making sure he found it :-3

You'll be in such amazing trouble now if Chloe doesn't survive long enough to fly. Keep her watered, or whatever she needs. Maybe not watered.

Popped back to say poor caterpillar is shrivelled and looking mighty dead, it obviously died from shock. RIP Chloe.
