YZGI;1307837 wrote: Ahso, no disrespect intended but you really have a need to completely control your threads don't you? Sometimes threads go into many different directions, that is no need to grab your ball and go. Without the ball, the game can't be played you know? Thanks for that, YZGI. No offense taken. I haven't gone anywhere except I've accepted the reality that the thread will be used as anyone wants to use it.

I do think its important that a thread stay focused and the posters remain on topic. It doesn't take much to veer off in any direction and some of that can be tolerated, but it should be brought back to its intended discussion when reminded. I veer off too at times and need to be reminded. Thats what moderators should be for in my view, to remind us when we've gone astray and guide us back to relevant posts and split threads and keep things orderly. Unfortunately in FG there doesn't seem to be a willingness to do this. I've reported a few posts recently, not to get people infractions but rather hoping the moderators will inform the offending poster that they must remain on topic instead of changing the intent of the threads. Offending posts need not be trashed, but they can be given their own thread or be put in the proper thread.

There happens to be a small number of people here who choose to do this at will because there are no consequences to it.

hoppy;1307846 wrote: We most certainly need more strict government control here.:yh_rotfl:yh_rotflSee case in point. I've just reported this post in the hope Hoppy will eventually get the message that wise-ass, irrelevant remarks are not welcomed in my threads. But I doubt he'll get that message, or at least heed it.

Because the word 'control' is in his post Hoppy thinks there is relevance to it. There isn't but he will never be taught how to behave properly on this forum because no one in authority is willing to teach him.

IMHO, threads belong to FG and not to the OP. Do you really expect moderators to go into each and every thread created to see if they are "on track" or not? If you create a thread and it's going South then try to bring it back on "track." If you can't and don't like the direction the thread is going in then leave the thread. Some OP's seem to think they have the power to tell members what they can and cannot post in their threads. I've learned that sometimes when a thread goes off topic it becomes more interesting. We all come here with different opinions and objectives but the bottom line is people need to stop taking things so personally and just have fun. :)

If a thread begins to veer off someone should have the presence of mind to start a new topic and if they neglect to then there is nothing wrong with the thread starter requesting amoderator to do it instead. Thats how its done in many other forums.

Maybe that's why other forums are little fun, have little friendship between members and forum garden has a varied interesting range of members? Perhaps if you dislike the way the forum is, you may find solace in other forum instead of trying to change the way members have been posting for years without complaint?

For the record, i don't post here much but i do come on as a guest regually for a read and i love Hoppy's remarks. He's a funny guy who livens the place up so chill out ahso as i think your taking this all rather too seriously.

Sardonic reposts do not become you ahso but to stay on topic you will find most forums suffer from which you have complained. Even the gentle art of angling forums have their bashers and those who will take them off topic. It's accepting that forums are made up of people and people are different. We are not all the same nor think the same and where some see humour others don't. It's learning to accept people warts and all.

This is not a rigidly moderated forum and ensuring that every post is within the intent of the OP is not part of our remit.

Neither is it part of the thread starter's remit to dictate the course of a thread.

Neither is it part of the thread starter's remit to dictate the course of a thread. So, you're saying any assumption of a conversation remaining on topic should not be made? Is that stated anywhere?

Perhaps a forum where posts are required to remain on topic should be created? I don't see how the debating forum can meet that need unless its a formal debate which is not what we're talking about.

if this place is so much fun how come you dont come here more and enjoy it?...413 posts in nearly 2 years is not really participating in a forum, im less than 30 posts behind you and i havnt even been here 3 months!

ive only found a couple of people i have fun with here.....and one of those isnt here now :(................in my short time here ive actually seen quite a lot of conflict between people ...which is something i am not used to on other forums i frequent (including one that has around 100 times the active number of posters than here)......i honestly find a lot of people dont seem to want to be friendly......certainly can seem hard to read things about people in posts, they dont give much away.....it wasnt til earlier tonight that i realised Spot is a guy!....up til now ive been thinking he is a she from reading his posts!!!!! :yh_rotfl

to be honest, this place could do with an injection of fun.....it kind of gets a bit dreary when the latest posts involve words beginning with a or p or w!.........or its some inane thread about complete rubbish by one of the tin foil hat brigade......i can see a dozen ways of creating fun threads i know from other places but ive tried that and dont want to be shot down in flames....again!.......oh and ive heard the arguement of how this place is like it is cos its open to young uns down to 13.........when was the last time this place saw someone near that age?..........im afraid any one like that will be on other teenage forums actually having teenage fun, not on one with 'serious' discussion threads...to me it seems the majority of people on here are 50+

as for real friendship.........serious question.....has anybody on here actually met each other via the forum?.........ive met plenty elsewhere, in fact i ended up with a partner and 3 step kids and a gaggle of step grand kids cos of one forum! :yh_rotfl

I agree with you and Beowulf Pam. I know that many of us have been trying to figure out why members are not posting too often anymore.

I love Forum Garden...as they say warts and all:D and don't want to leave here. I've looked at a lot of other sites and to me FG is at the top of my list. We have a lot of members here who have strong opinions, and that creates problems sometimes with members who disagree with them.

I still feel that a part of our apathy is that many of us have known each other cyberly for years, and like siblings have had our feelings hurt and issues not resolved. Many members left because they felt unwelcomed and ignored....others have been harassed by some bullies here.

I know that I've deleted a few posts in some threads during the last few days and have decided to stop doing that. I have to become less sensitive and roll with the punches..

I personally stay as a FG member because I love this place. I have fond memories of all the good times we've had in the past and hope that former members begin to return.

I'd like to have fun here...open the pub again and enjoy meeting again for a drink or some pub grub....wish more people were interested.....

I havent joined many other forums, bewoulf, but, like FG they seem to move in cycles...sometimes good, sometimes not so good, sometimes popular and at others not.

I met up with a lot of FG members when we had a meet in London and I found them to be genuine and friendly people. During an ill-fated trip to America a few years ago, I was befriended by a number of our American members who were willing to do anything for me that would have made my visit easier. I consider all these people friends.

I too have confused the gender of posters on here when I was a new member but it was quite amusing when I found out. And, I think it is people's prerogative as to how much they give away on a forum. For me, before I open up I need to know that people are genuine and not hiding behind a variety of different user names or taking the p*** by being disingenious.

Founder or long time members come and go (as I did for a while when real life took over) and its always good to see them back. Numbers of posts are unimportant when compared to seeing an "old" face posting again.

Bewoulf, I have seen conflicts on here that pale into insignificance when compared to those on other forums I have briefly visited. But then, that just my view.

Who are the tin foil hat brigade? So called inane posts can be a source of hilarity to some, though not to others. Our sense of humour varies from person to person, thats just how us humans are.

Its good to see you on the Trivia game and in the threads, Bewoulf. Some of your quiz comments make me giggle. Stay around and get to know FG and I feel sure you'll make some good friends. :-6

And I guess none of what has been going on here is a form of thread control.

There seems to be an idea in FG that when one or two long term members decide to trample on a thread its okay because more of you back the others up by participating. I don't think its right and it is definitely hindering growth here. But so be it. This is obviously the choice of management. Enjoy your deliberate destruction of yet another thread. There are a couple of you I am surprised at though, not that that matters.
