Around here, most folks say jag-war. What say you?

I think either is correct, providing of course we accept the way you Americans pronounce the English language :D

jag·uar

   /ˈdʒægwɑr, -yuˌɑr; especially Brit. ˈdʒægyuər/ Show Spelled[jag-wahr, -yoo-ahr; especially Brit. jag-yoo-er]

It's a head-turner for sure! Lustrous black with a gold jag-war on the hood, or should I say bonnet? The Owner's Manual has British terms, bonnet, screen, boot etc.

The word, in England at least, is that rarest of wordforms, a polysemous homograph. The two-syllable form refers to the cat, the three syllable form to the car, so I'd pronounce it differently depending on context. The car can't in any circumstance be named with the two-syllable variant. The cat could, in England, without involving too egregious a sin, use the same pronunciation as the car - Flanders and Swann did in one of their songs, I remember.

Around here (and we actually still have a few out in the wilderness surrounding us) we call them "Jag-wires." We also have the big cats we call Mountain Lions, or less often Cougars or Pumas. I saw one of those this weekend walking down a gully on the reservation.

In my younger & more foolish days, I owned a Jag XKE. (Maroon/Black rag top) It was magnificent to look at, & also to drive! However, that's when it did in fact actually drive. Many times having to leave it on the side of the road more times then not, I found myself walking almost as much as I drove it!

My XKE knew every repair shop within a 100 mile radius of my house! It was commonly called "The Rack Queen", the best looking car in the repair shop! :wah:

(Hopefully, today's Jaguar (still gorgeous) is better built!)

Well having adopted a slight Westcountry accent it's a Jag-u-arrrr with the hint of a burr at the end!

Or as Jeremy Clarkson would say - the Jaaaag!
