FYI not just the US but many other countries celebrate Memorial day and for the same reason.

Also because of the poem Flanders Fields veterans groups hand out Poppies in recognition in everyone of the countries that celebrate it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day

Myself, 3rd Cav, Tanker US Army Cavalry.

Wife 82nd Air borne Division Paratrooper.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders Fields.

John McCrae, 1915.

Um----am I missing something here. Happy Memorial Day? Celebrate Memorial Day?

What's happy about troops that were killed in a war and what are we supposed to celebrate?

Of course, but why are people wishing each other a "Happy Memorial Day" or "Celebration"? New Years is Happy, Christmas is Merry, but what in the hell is happy about Memorial Day. Did you read the other posts?

Guess you're not going to any outdoor BBQ parties!

Celebrate the "freedom" that the troops fought for & some died for to give us!

Didn't mean to sound like a cantankerous old fart Cars, but I think many people just look at Memorial Day as just another nice long weekend without any idea of what Memorial Day is all about, plus, it does sound strange when one says "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY".

yes, its a long weekend in the US.....that's not their fault.

some go to church and pray.

some go to a Memorial Day parade or event.

some just chill, party, see friends and family.

when we say Happy Memorial Day.......it just means have a good weekend.

what do you suggest people who work all week do?

You and I don't communicate very well Odie-----I am not talking about what people do or don't do on Memorial Day, but what they say. Could you imagine someone saying "Happy 9/11" ?-----This could very well be a day off in the future.

It does not sound strange to me to say Happy Memorial day. It is a day to celebrate what we have because of what those who have died to give us.

May be it's more warrior / Budo mindset. When I get together with my Military friends we may shed a tear but we don't spend all day doing it. We celebrate our fallen brothers as they lived.

To us Hooah and Semper Fi are more then words. It is a way of living and dieing. Every time a paratrooper steps up to the door even during training they could die. Do they walk up to the door like timid sheep? Or do the charge into the sky yelling so load Peters gates rattle?

I hope you can understand. It's very hard with typed words to help non military types understand arcane warrior codes. At this very moment a good friend of mine is on his 6th tour over in Iraq. Flies Blawkhawks, every time he takes off says a short prayer but then flies into the **** with a smile on his face. If he gets it will I cry Yes, but I will celebrate his death as he lived. It is the least I could do to show him respect.

Again I hope my feeble words can convey my meaning.

Yes he is, over 6,4 so he looks like he is sitting in a clown chopper! Contrary to what the media tells you Iraqi's are fighting tooth and nail for their new country and freedoms. One of Robs responsibilities this tour is over seeing at the battalion level advanced training for Iraqi soldiers. In just a few years they have become a professional force.

FYI He is married, sorry ladies.

Now this does **** me off,

Obama, he'd rather be with Paul in Chicago on Memorial Day ....

44 - Obama will use Memorial weekend for a trip home to Chicago

Obamas plan casual Chicago Memorial Day weekend with friends - Lynn Sweet

south of Chicago - missing the usual tradition of presidents speaking at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

This story is a white wash worthy of Provda, one of the comments.

Mike in Florida on May 25, 2010 10:38 AM. Obama is passing on honoring those who gave their lives for the freddom he abuses on Memorial Day for a second

I wonder how much longer they will leave up the comments ripping him.

Obamas' visit back home leaves Chicagoans guessing - Chicago Breaking News

One wonders who their eventual political masters will tell them to fight, once the Americans have left.

Or they will have the power training and will to fight for them selves. Our road to independence was very messy and took the better part of 20 years before it had a firm foundation. They have come along way in a short time.

Once one has tasted freedom AFTER oppression one will fight for it.
