I'd love to kvetch here a bit as I'm about to lose my mind lately with the antics of my neighbors....Please tell me if I'm overreacting....be brutal so I'll cop onto myself and not worry so much.....

As many of you know, I have a wee shack at the beach, and it's a handy man's special that I've spent a fortune trying to renovate. My home has not been loved by its former owners, and I have to fix too many structural issues. Plus taxes and insurances are going sky high with each year. I'm working 2 jobs, often 3, to support my home as I love living here.

I can probably retire in 3 years and won't be able to afford my shack due to taxes and insurances. I'd love to just enjoy my next 3 years here.

Unfortunately, I live next to a restaurant with 3 separate rental units. One of the units has 3 bedrooms with usually 4 people living there full time.

I now have 3 young men...maybe 19 to 21 years old living there. They have lived here since Oct. of 2009 and only partied a few times. Now that the weather is beautiful and hot, they are partying toooooooo much.

I feel like I'm living next to a disgusting frat house. They never take their garbage out and when they do, it never gets to the curb before the gulls tear it apart and their garbage is all over the neighborhood, their cigarette butts are all over my yard, they drink 24/7 and have wild, wild parties...beer bongs, wrestling on the filthy grounds at 3 AM....oh, I could go on and on....It's just party central.

I've spoken to the boys, the owners of the rental home and the police to no avail....

Our police force has a bad reputation for beating up the visitors to our town, and now they've become too complacent as they've been sued too often. It seems that they've lost their power and given all the rights to the rowdy citizens of my town.

I've basically lost my rights as a home owner in my town. It seems that anyone living or renting in my town have the right to be as loud as they want...as long as it's not too crazy, they have the right to drink to oblivion 24/7 in their house/yard, and they can party all they want and keep their music as loud as they want.

I, as a homeowner, have the same rights and can call the police if my neighbors are too loud or crazy. The police will determine if the situation needs correcting and act accordingly. I can't count on my neighbors to help as this is their summer home and aren't here all the time.

I have the right to spend a fortune on an attorney to make a complaint against my neighbors, but that doesn't mean that I win.

I've lost...they've won...and that is my life here now. I can't go out and enjoy my yard when they're around everywhere with their tons of 'friends'

Thanks for listening....I really needed to vent;)

Ah Kathy, that is too bad you do not have good neighbors.:(

I spent too many years of having horrible neighbours and was so pleased when I moved out. The stress of it just isn't worth it in the end. Would it really be out of the question to move now to somewhere you plan to retire to?

I like Betty's suggestion you live at the beach summer is coming it won't get any better. Might be time to consider selling and get a place you can afford as you approach retirement. The beach is the beach its where young people hang out. There has to be other area close by you would like.:-6:-6

I hear what you're saying Betty and agree. I've lived here for 12 years and have had some good renters living next door and many awful ones.

I'm hoping that my home will sell for a better price in 3 years...hoping that the economy might be better:confused::thinking:

I'm just not ready to sell right now. I've put a fortune into this shack.I love my shack, and it's honestly breaking my heart to sell. I have a lot of memories in my town. My family has been renting here since I was a baby...it's my 2nd home.

But, I know that I'll have to move in 3 years. New Jersey is one of the most difficult States to live in as our government taxes us to death.

I agree Carla. It's not pleasant living at the beach lately as there are too many rental places and not enough stability for homeowners here.

I don't want to 'jump the gun' and sell for a lower price. I have to somehow 'tough it up' until times are better. I don't want to lose all of the money I've put into my home. I somehow have to deal with these renters so I can survive for a bit longer :(

Is it too expensive to have sound insulation installed?

Hi Diana:-6

Yes, it would cost mucho money to insulate, and I don't want to do that since I'll be moving in 3 years.....although I don't want to....~~~sigh~~~

I'm trying to cope with this situation before I hire a lawyer if things get too bad...I will be putting on the air con, wearing earplugs, closing doors and windows, and calling the police when things are out of control.

I would give Guido from Newark a $100 to have a nice friendly chat with your young renters next door. He could make them a nice offer that they could not refuse.:-6

I would just advise you to keep your sense of humor. Don't give these rowdy kids the power to ruin your enjoyment of your retreat. ♥

As for the trash problem...........these might encourage cleanliness outdoors.....

Well, you can always invite me and my TKD friends up there for a little practice section in the back yard-breaking up some winter firewood, stuff like that. We can yell louder than their music while working out, they would notice us.

Sorry to hear of this stinkin mess KE! Rowdy neighbors are catostrofic!!! To make maters worse, it's a shame that you may be forced to "move" from your house that you love in 3 years anyway!! And that's after putting up with those hooligans all that time!!! It just may be worthwhile for you to spend the money to hire a bulldog lawyer, who will chew up those rowdy's along with that complacent Police dept.

(3 YEARS is a LONG time!)

1. Call their parents.:sneaky:

2. If you had any yard left, I'd suggest mowing bright and early the morning after. Nothing annoys me more then trying to sleep in and getting woke up by the neighbors weed wacker:sneaky:

3. Have Chonsi out for a visit. I really like that one.:D

Kathy, I do know what you are having to deal with. We've had yob problems for literally years. Burglaries, criminal damage, threats, lived in fear for years, till just recently when things have gone nicely quiet (don't know for how long, but keeping everything crossed), which may be something to do with having a German Shepherd, CCTV, and security lights. Not quite Fort Knox, but quite close !

I would say that you had a very good case to call in the environmental health people, with all their filth thrown all over the place and left! It must be encouraging rats at the very least! They are behaving in a manner that could cause a violent situation - had the police thought of that? I suppose they just say, oh it's just youngsters having harmless fun. But it isn't harmless, it is making you ill. Tell the authorities that you will send them the bill for the difference between the money you actually make selling your property and the money you should have made, had the neighbours been better behaved. This is the main bugbear that we have over the potential sale of our property, how much will it affect the value? It is not fair, and people should not be expected to put up with any of it. Your police are disgusting, and I'd send a complaint to the complaints department of the police. They do not like bad press, so that's another possibility - get the press on your side, maybe, although you may prefer to keep your head down as regards that. We are concerned for ourselves and any potential 'get you back for that!' attitude, if we push it. It's a bit different for us as well - there are three of us, there's only one of you.

They don't care, it's I, me, my attitude again. They know that there is nothing anybody can do (they think!). I bet you anything you like that the owners of the other places, where they are not permanent residents like yourself, would soon start shouting if their properties were damaged by these idiots!

If only Chonsi and her group were closer, they could visit your yard and flex their muscles, by just demonstrating their craft and skill. Not just on one evening either. Those yobs would, if they had an ounce of sense, realise that you had some very interesting friends!! I wouldn't think they would want to risk being 'sorted out' by such a group as Chonsi's !!!

The other suggestion about getting a good and sympathetic lawyer to sort the matter out, although an expensive idea, could possibly produce a result.

But in the end, why the hell should you, Kathy, have to think of doing these sort of things just to preserve your sanity and your lovely home? The whole matter is a total farce and a huge question mark against the so-called protectors of the innocent - the police.

I wish you the very best, Kathy. And thinking of you always. Just try to keep positive, try to take no notice of them, and remember that you have a load of friends on here happy to let you vent whenever you want.

Thank you so much Gill for your lovely reply. I know that you're going through the same things as I am with neighbors. It's amazing how one small group of people can destroy your peace and quiet.

It's been quiet for the last 3 days as the boys have been away. They're also quiet today as the owner is here cleaning up the yard. They all ran for the hills when they saw him...So did I:driving:. The man is becoming a bit forgetful and hard of hearing. He'll talk up a storm and not let you go....Plus he has a very strong accent and I hardly know what he's saying:thinking:

Thank you again Gill:-4

OH, AND IT'S 90/32 DEGREES HERE AND THEY HAVE NO AIR CONDITIONERS....:D Bet they're hot as hell:D
