12 Volunteers Needed

Just wondering how many members that have criticized the current moderation team would be willing to volunteer to replace a member on that team. We need 12people who are willing to take insults, cronic complainers, members telling you how you should be doing your job, being accused of favoritism, dealing with spammers and trolls. That's only half of the responsibilities you'll find the others once you volunteer.

We now need 12 members to sign up. The only rule is that you cannot have been a previous moderator here.

Any volunteers?

It's not the Mods who are the problem, its the members who constantly complain to them.

I will glady give my seat up as MOD to anyone who wants it El Guapo you can step in and I will step out not a problem no worries. I think a new list has to be sent to TS for approval. I see no problem with changing the MOD's at all. It is a difficult job and I will admit I'm a bit worn out at the moment with my real life job and life, new members in the MOD area excellent idea. :D

How can people talk this way? Moderators are clearly NOT awesome. The canning of a good thread yesterday showed that. At first it appeared it was just one over-eager moderator but she said it was a group decision. So while any of the current moderators are in office, no poster is going to feel able to express themselves again without being either censored, threatened or consigned to the cellar - where only elite members with passwords in Secret Five mode can creep down to see what the heck's going on.

Forum Garden can't prosper while there is this current repressive culture. If anyone says anything at all controversial - they are silenced.

Equally, Forum Garden can't prosper while there is this pervasive, juvenile "I'm going to tell the teacher on you" mode.

If we have to have moderators at all, in my opinion they should be restricted to dealing ONLY with spam, pornography or other SERIOUS breaches of TOS. If posters knew that their silly little squabbles were not reportable, they'd eventually get the message. And if moderators were not seen to be part of the gossipy, behind-the-scenes festerings, that would also help.

If Tombstone wants his forum alive and moderated, perhaps he should pay a neutral non-member to do it.

Members need to be able to speak, to express themselves without always looking over their shoulders. We need some "creative chaos" if you like, some fire. Why are we all so afraid of an occasional flare-up? If all possible risk is excised or sanitised, then it's Requiem time.

What do you consider "SERIOUS" breaches of TOS (perhaps you could give an example or two)?

There are different forms of moderating. JREF is a pretty active debate forum and I think is run very well in terms of flexibility, though it is a forum where debate is sport. OTOH The Couch is a very small forum with good conversations and the owner moderates it in a way some may consider strict.

What I don't get is this idea that a forum must be highly active just to be active. I can see that from an ownership POV for advertising and in this case paid memberships, but I see no purpose at all in activity for the sake of activity. I think thats the main problem with this forum - theres no theme or meaning to it, its just post to post. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me quite honestly. I know I may get criticized for saying that with "then why did you want to come back?" The truth is I owed some people an apology and others gratitude.

This site is owned and operated by Tombstone. Here are the rules we as MODS have to govern by. If you would like to join us in the task daily you are more than welcome. :D From my perspective rule 1.0 Be Civil need to be read several times by every member daily.

ForumGarden General Rules

1.General Posting Rules:

1.0 Be Civil. If there was just one rule, this would be it. ForumGarden is not here to be your personal battlefield. The Golden Rule applies. People who embark on personal attacks or are unable to comment on the CONTENT but instead go after the poster are not welcome. ForumGarden is a place where friends gather. If you are unable to cope with a friendly and supportive atmosphere, then please leave. Friendliness counts and it will determine whether or not you have an account here. Draconian rules? If you are a non-civil trouble-maker, I'm sure you'll think so! For all other friends, welcome!

(See 1.0) 1.1 No "Flaming": Please do not post any messages that harrass, insult, belittle, threaten or flame another member or guest.

(See 1.0) 1.2 No "Trolling": Please do not post any topic that disrupts the peace and harmony of this board. Don't create threads with the sole purpose of starting a dispute. This includes messages in profiles and signatures and the creation of duplicate accounts.

(See 1.0) 1.3 No "Spamming": Please do not double post or cross-post the same message in multiple forums. You will not mass-PM or mass-email multiple members of this site the same message. You will not post for the sake of increasing your post count.

1.4 No "Hotlinking": Please do not hotlink images to your post or signature line. You are provided an efficient and easy-to-use "manage attachments" option when you post. If you don't know what hotlinking is, read this.

1.5 No "Offensive" Posts, Links or Images: Please do not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, racist, sexist, discriminatory, or otherwise violative of any local or international laws. This includes links in your signature, profile, bookmarks as well as posted images, photos and avatars. Staff will ultimately decide if something is appropriate or not.

2. Self-Promotion :

Please do not post any messages anywhere on this site that are primarily for the promotion or advertising of any website, forums, email address, business, MLM, activity, or other entities that you have an affiliation with (ie. no self-promotion).

3. Copyrighted Material :

3.1 Please do not upload, attach or post anything that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other proprietary rights of any party.

4. Signature Rules :

4.1 Size Limits: All signatures should not exceed the following size limits:

Just Text: 8 lines small size or 4 lines size 2 and up to 90 chars per line

Just Image: 1 image up to 300 pixels wide, 125 pixels tall and 20k in size

Text and Image: 4 lines (or 2 with Textsize 2) and one image (in a new line) up to 300 pixels wide, 75 pixels tall and 20k in size.

( Empty lines are counted as well.)

4.2 Content restrictions: You may have a link to your own website or services, but there must be no promotional language like "Best Hosting" or "Great Deals". Paypal and affiliate links are not permitted.

Dynamic scripts linked in signatures that attempt to create cookies in another person's browser are not allowed for security reasons and will be removed.

A note on FREE SPEECH:

---------------------------

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The First Amendment is greatly respected here at ForumGarden. However, ForumGarden is private property and we request that members adhere to all forum policies. It is a contract agreed to by all who become members of ForumGarden. Those who break forum rules cannot invoke censorship or freedom of speech - a contract broken is a contract broken. I agree with a lot of this AP. Not so much the first paragraph, but a lot of the rest.

The group of mods that were available at the time some members decided to turn that thread into a playground fight, moved it off to compost. As the rest of us showed up, it was discussed and then replaced into the open air and light of day with the off topic crap removed. That was, of course, a wasted effort. Idiots will be idiots and no amount of wasted time on the part of the moderators will stop them being idiots. I suggest everyone just read around them like I try to.

We'd love to limit ourselves to the porn and spam. I specifically signed up for the porn.:p

Funny thing about the repressive culture, AP. New TOS went into effect(affect?) because of a few real jackasses who'd parked themselves in our world. Unfortunately, those new TOS had to be applied to everyone rather then just the jackasses in question. And so we lost folks who got hit and then just flamed out and we find ourselves still reading around the jackasses.

Being a mod is not an awesome thing. It makes it impossible to have an opinion without some idiot deciding you are declaring policy and trying to work everyone into a frenzy over a non issue.

If I agree with you too much, it will be called favoritism, don't you know?

So I'll stop here....

and simply say I miss looking for your posts when I pop in here.:-4

The dialogue of the recent past is only certain concerned members who are fighting for TS's own interests, and that being to increase membership again.

I don't think an obviously inflammatory thread such as this one (though I agree she has the right to present the thread) does much to inject any positive feedback into the events. Instead it is meant to divide. At least thats how I see it. We don't need to be lectured as in the OP about how sympathetic we should be toward you folks, nearly everyone agrees the moderators have a difficult job to do, but most of us are only attempting to offer up ideas on how to make that job easier and more conducive to the board's purpose and needs.

Also, I must say that with one or two or three exceptions everyone has handled themselves pretty good, IMO. Perhaps a mistake here or there but quickly made up for.

Not too bad for a bunch of internet forum whores.

I can't hardly remember what the concerns were. If TS come back is he going to want to private chat with me again? It's really embarrassing..

You have to have a positive spirit around here, if not, then you have a bad day and to many bad days makes Odie want to leave.;)

I can hear those mods cheer now!:yh_rotfl

AussiePam;1316741 wrote: How can people talk this way?

Thank you, AussiePam, for expressing what I was REALLY thinking. ;)
