A number of molluscs in the garden have just been spared by the failure of my torch batteries.
When have *your* torch batteries gone "flat" at an inopportune moment? What happened?

I know when you say "torch", we in the US say "flashlight".
When it's night and therefore dark, and a storm is rumbling in, we keep ours within reach.....just in case. If the lights do go off, we light a small kerosene lamp and carry the flashlight into the bathroom with us. We always keep extra batteries in a drawer.....and know by instinct where that drawer is. :wah:
