CNN has fired its senior editor for Middle Eastern affairs after she published a Twitter message praising the late Lebanese Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah.
Octavia Nasr has been told to leave the US television news network after praising the Lebanese cleric who died from internal bleeding in a Beirut hospital on Sunday.
“Sad to hear of the passing of Seyyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah¦ One of Hezbollah's giants I respect a lot, Nasr wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter on Sunday.
CNN officials learned of Nasr's message on Monday and shortly after, a written statement on CNN's website said Nasr had made an "error of judgment."

That has me almost as puzzled as her being fired in the first place. In what sense was it tweeting on the company site? All I can see is that she tweeted on her personal Twitter account.

I might be wrong but everytime I hear a CNN host say "follow me on Facebook, or Tweet me" when they are on the air I'm assuming they are representing corporate CNN.

How very uncultured of them. Nobody does that on the BBC.
Nor on Al Jazeera either, come to that.

It's the latest thing over here spot. Even small midwest newspapers have tweet feeds and reporters are expected to be updating them constantly.

But those *are* corporate tweet accounts, floppy. Surely people can distinguish one from the other. What you and Carla are implying is that Octavia Nasr has no right to express a personal opinion if she works for CNN.

that's her tweet account spot. some of our reporters have personal accounts also. They don't contain our company branding as hers does.

Don't get me wrong. I think it was asinine for them to fire her. A reporter has an obligation to not take a position, but rather to simply report the facts. Commentators and columnists can(theoretically) have all the personal opinion they want. That hasn't stopped them from being let go, in the past, however.
I would hope that some other news organization would snap her up quickly.

So it is, I didn't know that.
I wonder what her terms of employment were and the instructions she'd been given on using the Tweet account.

I would think her lawyer would be going back through her prior posts looking for other personal commentary that had not been cause for any type of reprimand. I'm guessing the girl is gonna score big here.
