ARGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH.................:-5:-5:-5:-5:-5
When I was about 19 I went to a beautiful place called Andrew's Mare in the New Forest. Again it was a night of shooting stars. I was with a group of friends and we had an amazing night, standing in the middle of the New Forest, watching these amazing stars shooting across the heavens. The sky was incredibly clear and the view was just superb. Later, we all went skinny-dipping in a new forest lake, whilst the stars continued to shoot across the sky overhead. It was an amazing night, one I'll never forget.
So last night was touted as an amazing visual display. I decided I wanted my children to share this incredible experience (without the skinny-dipping part, lol.)
So I told them how wonderful it was going to be. We drove out to the New Forest at about 9pm and found somewhere to watch. Unfortunately the forecast of clear skies was complete bo****ks and we could barely see a thing. We ended up driving all around and through the New Forest trying to find a patch of clear sky. We ended up having to turn onto a duel carriageway with no turn offs for miles. Hubby kept complaining that we were low on petrol and were bound to break down in the middle of nowhere!
Of course, driving down the dual carriageway, the sky was beautifully clear. A million stars twinkled overhead - but not one of them moved!
We finally managed to find an open garage and were able to then zig-zag our way back through the forest. The sky was covered in huge dense black clouds with just an occasional patch of starry sky visible and once again, not a single star moved!
We went back to Andrews Mare on Emery Down and once again there were loads of teenagers drinking and shouting and watching for shooting stars. They were also playing their music loudly and leaving their car lights on, so causing unnecessary light pollution.
After spending 3 hours driving, we covered about 100 miles all told, we didn't see one single sodding shooting star. Of course, when we got home the clouds had disappeared and the night sky was beautifully clear. Hubby was knackered and went to bed but I was wide awake and stayed up. I went outside at 3am and again at 4am and looked up at the beautifully clear night sky. The stars twinkled and the Plough shone . . . but not one of those blasted meteors moved so much as an inch! And the met office promised us shooting stars every half a second!
Tonight is supposed to be almost as fantastic as last night...but I've been out a couple of times and once again...it's a beautiful cloudless starry night...and not one flaming thing is moving anywhere!

Do you know the loveliest thing about your experience?
Your children will always remember such times. The greatest gifts you can give your children Is your time and happy memories.
My Father was just like you and would say 'Right Kids, wrap up warm, there Is a storm out at sea, let's go watch it'..
Peter did say that what he saw was the odd one here and there around midnight to 1.30 am but he strayed no further than the front garden :wah:

That is so true! I love doing unusual things with them. :-6
I used to work as a Nanny. One lady I worked for used to tell people she spent 'quality time' with her daughter.
Her idea of quality time was to have her little daughter underfoot whilst she was cooking dinner. I used to be worried sick that she would spill something hot on that child. It's such a shame when people don't appreciate the children they helped create. :-5

So So True...
Quality time Is driving round the New Forest at night seeing bugger all :yh_rotfl Watching storms with your Dad, collecting shells on a beach, teaching your kids games, sport etc etc...
We live In such a materalistic world these days and when I look back at my childhood, I would not swop those times for the world. Even just out walking holding my Dad's hand made me feel so cherished.
Your children will thank You for that when they are older and look back.

Yeah, I have good memories of my dad too.
It's lovely making such memories too. We were down on Shanklin Beach the other day and we went to play in the arcade. The kids get potfuls of 2p's to put in the machines. We won LOADS of these squidgy balls with cute faces on them that flash when you tap them. They're now sitting on the front dash in the car and hubby smacks them all when we go for a drive late at night, so that other drivers can see all these annoying flashing balls in the front of our car! Lol!
There's also a fun crazy golf course there, which we've played on hundreds of times, but which the kids still love. Hubby was winning but I added 10 points to his score for cheating! He hit his ball up and over an obstruction instead of going around it the long way! So my daughter ended up winning as she went round with the least number of points. She was thrilled to win and thought it was hilarious that I awarded her daddy 10 points for cheating! :wah:
Then she and her daddy went down on the beach and were skimming stones together whilst I sat on the wall of the promenade and took photos of them having fun. We tried on silly beach hats and ate icecreams and laughed a lot. You're right. Great memories!
