~~~~Feel free to talk about anything sci fi...UFO's, movies, sci fi radio shows, books, astronomy, Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, etc. ~~~~
Does anyone believe that there is intelligent life in outer space? If so, do you think that this life has landed on Earth?
What are some of your favorite sci fi movies?
Are you a stargazer? Do you have a telescope to look at the stars?
Well I think the likely hood of another planet in the universe having some sort of life on is extremely high. Whether any of them have visited earth makes very interesting debate . There are few members here I question came from the same planet I did but thats another thread.
I love Science fiction. Loved reading Azimov when I was a kid and my favourite sci-fi films are 2001: a Space Odyssey, Bladerunner plus a few old obscure ones that'll come to me during the evening
ETA....Carl Sagan's documentary series "Cosmos" in the 80's was wonderful
Thank you so much for responding to my post Snowfire.
I do believe in intelligent life in outer space, but don't feel that they've arrived yet:wah: Maybe they're developing at the same speed that we are.
I love astronomy, oceanography and anything alien. You'll often find me and my wee telescope in my backyard fixed on our beautiful sky. Last night, I watched the ISS and a few other satellites glide through the sky.
I had the honor of meeting Isaac Asimov when I was in college. I noticed that he was the guest speaker at a local college in Hoboken, NJ...a town only 10 minutes away from me. He spoke about everything alien, his books, importance of being a good writer, and love for our universe. He encouraged everyone to greet him on the stage. I was so excited to shake his hand and continue to listen to him share his thoughts with everyone there.
My favorite radio program in the States is coasttocoastam.com. I love listening to Art Bell and George Noory. They are the hosts of the show....well, Art is not there too often anymore.
Did you see Men in Black? That was a great flick!
Forgot to mention that I loved reading Carl Sagan's books and watching Cosmos every week. He was a brilliant man and a good soul. He died too young.
Wow ! You met Isaac Azimov that is the greatest name drop I ever heard.
I don't know if you have heard of our own Patrick Moore. He still introduces "The Sky at Night". Its an astronomy programme tucked away on late night BBC television and has been running since the 50's I think. He's very eccentric, wears a monocle and must be well into his 80's ( he talks on the telly and his teeth dont fit :wah:) . He is an amateur astronomer but became one of the foremost authorities on the Moon and even NASA have sought his knowledge in the past.
I'm just looking up the titles of those classic sci-fi films
Oh Snowfire, It was such an honor to meet Isaac Asimov. He was such a gentleman.
I loved all of the Alien movies, Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet .....Don't know the Moon movie. I'll have to look into that.
Did you have "Mystery Science Theater 3000" in the UK? A man and his robot sidekicks made fun of all the B rated movies...hysterical...
This series of science fiction stories from the 60's is a classic:
YouTube - THE OUTER LIMITS - Creation Of A Sci-Fi Classic !!
This is one of my favorite episodes:
Hulu - The Outer Limits - Original: Zzzzzz - Watch the full episode now.
A different take on the "other woman" theme.
Does anyone remember....forgot which show....Twilight or O Limits.... when 2 couples went to the lake for a swim? They swam out to a raft, and a blobby monster began killing them all on the raft. Think it was one of the newer TZ's.
Incidentally KE, have you seen "The Fourth Kind" ?
I watched it this afternoon. Its a little clumsy at times but along the lines of Blair Witch it tells the story of Alien abductions.
I thought it might be something you would like
I don't think it's TZ, KE. I've seen them all several times. I remember the one where the 2 kids have bickering parents and they slip away.
Art Bell lives (part time) very close to my house in Nevada, (Nye County, "where things go bump in the night." His house has an enormously high chain link fence around it and a bunch of radio towers, etc. The broadcasting studio is about 4 -5 miles away. There are some strange things going on there for sure.
Steven King wrote it....It's called "The Raft." The series of short stories is called Creepshow 2. Great stories.
Here's the youtube of the story...oy vey...think you have to watch the video in parts..look to the right of the video.
Do you ever see him in town with his new wife and baby?
I miss the old Art Bell...when he had real kooky people on....Like if you listen on a certain date you had to be a werewolf or a vampire:wah:
Did you listen to the show when everyone was calling in to the show saying that there was a ufo directly above them...think it was in Phoenix???? Art spoke to the 911 operator who was fielding all the calls. It was a hysterical show:-6
I rarely get over to my house anymore but my friend lives in it and she has seen him but not with his wife. Right before he married her I was trying to get his autograph for my son-in-law who was an avid fan of his and his show, so I drove past his house and video taped it and the radio station but Art was out of town. He used to have breakfast in one of the restaurants I frequented.
I think, especially after his son died, he really became a recluse...He didn't deserve the rumors about him.
Some good movies. The mention of John Carpenter's name reminded me of another of his Sci-Fi movies, "Philadelphia Experiment." Also from 1984, a friend of mine wrote the screenplay for it, at the request of John Carpenter. In the credits, however, because of Hollywood politics, he had to share the writing credits with two others, relatives of bigwigs, even though he had written 99 % of the movie. I went to the screening of it which the Science Fiction Guild held in Hollywood. This movie probably doesn't qualify as a Close Encounter, so, sorry if this went off topic.
Oh Snowfire,
Thank you so much for recommending "Silent Running" with Bruce Dern. I somehow missed this move in my hayday. I absolutely loved the movie and have to watch it again, expecially to hear Joan Baez sing. Wooo...Bruce Dern...I don't know anything about him except for his stupid reality show, The Kardashians." He acts like an a**hole on this show.
This is the kind of movie that helps me think about our future Earth. I just want to give our planet a great big hug, and say that I'm sorry that we earthlings are such idiots, and we'll try to be more 'Earth friendly.'
What an enlightening and delightful movie Snowfire. I loved it!!!
You're very welcome KE. It's always a pleasure to share something you've enjoyed for so long. I've loved science fiction films ever since Kubricks masterpiece 2001, A Space Odyssey in 1969. It was memerising and it didnt matter to me that I hadnt a clue at the time what it was all about.
There is another film that comes to mind. I cant remember if I've already mentioned it.
Dark Star. An early John Carpenter film. Its strange and often very funny
Excellent film - still sticks in the mind even after all these years.
The debates between the crew and the existentialist bomb were hilarious.
