Just wondered as I still wonder if it is better to give kids corporal punishment and hope it deters them from committing further misdemeanors, or to `tell them off` and hope they behave better in the future because they don`t feel resentment because you haven`t physically chastised them?

Please describe, if at all possible, the type of punishments you received, and frequency of same?

got the wooden spoon across my butt as a kid, and it instilled upon me that my parents and other adults were to be respected and listened to. If nothing else they got my attention immediately.

These days if you don't get kids attention, you haven't a hope in hades of getting any kind of message across to them

I never really ever got a spankin per say - I was always afraid to back talk anyone in my family..( I am the youngest of 12- the oldest being 21 yrs older..so I had MANY moms!) One day - my folks left us alone and I was in high school..Things got out of hand after the WHOLE town found out they were gone...one thing led to another - the house got trashed, things were stolen, and I was **dead**..

My folks got home and I was taking my punishment - when my dad said something I thought just wasn't right... So I guess I thought my pants were bigger then they were...and BAM! he smacked me so hard I flew across the room into the stove....I NEVER disrespected my folks ever again - and I think I learned a lot that night...RESEPCT -RESPECT - RESPECT!

No need for a spanking when we were growing up... All my mother had to say was "WAIT TILL YOUR DAD GETS HOME" man we would become angels in seconds. Now mind you my dad was a gentle soul, and never laid a hand on us. But as kids the "WAIT TILL YOUR DAD GETS HOME" threat worked every time..

Some interesting replies - yes, I think one of the descriptions WOULD nowadays count as `abuse` and lead to criminal prosecution. Anybody know why the Americans call it `paddle`; isn`t it just a run of the mill cane or stick; isn`t a paddle what you use to propel a boat???!

Caned, Strapped etc etc whatever the good "Christian Brothers" could think of but then again I was 7 and therefore probably deserved to be punished.
