My friend's neighbor's son was visited by the police yesterday, because he was shooting his BB gun in his backyard. It seems his neighbors called the police because a gun was being used in the back yard. The son was advised that it would be wise to use the gun in the vacant woods.



So is a BB gun really a dangerous gun & should the police have been called?

Yes it can hurt some one. Doesn't matter that its not bullets still dangerous and not allowed here at all.

I don't blame the neigbour one bit..it could have taken his eye out.

BB guns can do extreme harm, try shooting one on a pop can and see the indent.

they are illegal here......but of course sold at flea markets when the cops aren't around.

kids used to use them to take out birds way back when.

I was just going to put how the kids use them to kill mice up on the farm -so they can definitely be dangerous, but decided to google it anyways..

It's usually not the one firing it that gets hurt.

Big difference between a BB gun and an Air Rifle.

Either one can be dangerous in un-trained hands.

A basic BB gun has spring, which launches the BB at a relatively low velocity. It would take a rather unusual situation for one to actually be fatal, but a hit into an eyeball or ear at short range could cause serious damage.

An Air rifle has either a CO2 cartridge or a Pump apparatus that allows air pressure to launch the projectile. These can fire the pellet at a high enough velocity that at close range it can penetrate skin and cause painful damage, and has caused death.

No un-trained child should ever be allowed to operate one unsupervised, when other people, particularly other children (or small animals, particularly pets) are around.

Having said that, I remember when we were kids, we took ours out into the woods all the time and fought battles with them.

Fortunately for us, no one ever suffered a serious injury (at least not as a result of being shot)

And oddly enough, we never wasted ammo on the small animals we encountered. We never had that mean streak, I guess.

Of course the lot of us were all trained in proper firearm use and safety by our fathers.

If they ever found out about our adventures they would have taken the things away from us.

Whatever the gun, though, that fellow's advice is key:

"You always treat every gun as if it's loaded. Make certain of what's beyond your target and you check it and check it and check it again.”

Question - from the distance the neighbour was observing from would (s)he have known it was a BB gun?

If it could have been a real gun then was the neighbour right to report it?

It does not matter whether a BB gun is harmless or not if the person reporting it believed it to be a real weapon.

True enough. If all you see is somebody outside with a gun, it would seem your duty to report it.

Besides the bodily harm, I have seen a lot of automobile windows and home windows ruined by a BB gun.
