I couldn't find a thread on it here, but we've been watching it since dinner last night.

Been crying my face off, it's so emotional, exhilarating. Miner #22 is on his way up now. yeaaa

I'm so impressed with the technology and especially the spirit and faith of the people of Chile. We are watching history, folks. Is anyone else watching it and loving it as much as we are?

Miracles in action. xox

I've heard many of the trapped miners are Muslim, what do you think of that, CB? Allah has delivered them.

Below is an awesome article I found about NASA. Only at breakfast today did I learn that NASA was involved in the rescue. If this incredible combined effort to save lives doesn't bring people together, I'm afraid nothing will. But it did and it does. My heart is full. xoxo

From Outer Space to Underground: NASA's Life-Saving Role in Chilean Miner Rescue

by Examiner astronomer Paul Heckert:

"How NASA Helped Rescue Chilean Miners Near Copiapó, Chile"

Here are a few quick notes on Heckert's explanation of NASA's role:

* A NASA team of two physicians, a psychologist, and an engineer visited Chile on August 31 to provide technical assistance.

* The two NASA physicians, Michael Duncan and J.D. Polk, and psychologist Al Holland made recommendations on how the trapped miners could stay healthy while confined 2,300 feet under Copiapó. For example, the NASA experts recommended, among other things, regular exercise, staying on the normal 24-hour sleep cycle, and staying busy. They also recommended that the miners stay involved in their own rescue efforts rather than wait passively.

* NASA engineer Clint Cragg also traveled to Chile to help provide technical expertise. Cragg's experience on Navy submarines also helped him provide recommendations for keeping the miners healthy.

Government is an easy scapegoat and a frequent target for what's going wrong with America -- or any country for that matter -- but government always seems to be involved in finding solutions to our most vexing issues. The Chilean government led this "problem-free" effort, as reported by NPR:

The anxiety that had accompanied the careful final days of preparation broke at 12:11 a.m., when the stoutest of the men, Florencio Avalos, emerged from the missile-like chamber and smiled broadly after his half-mile journey to fresh air. Amid an explosion of cheers, Avalos hugged his sobbing 7-year-old son and wife and then President Sebastian Pinera, who has been deeply involved in an effort that had become a matter of national pride.

When was the last time we felt that "national pride" about a government-led effort here in the United States?

Of course, for each of these 33 miners that are being saved, there are 33 more that perished in mine accidents this year, and Chilean citizens are looking to their government to achieve industry reform that makes mines safer.

For good or bad, government gets involved. In this particular situation -- and I think in most circumstances -- they get it right.

Consider that our neighbors and family members who work as civil servants get up every day to ensure that the infrastructure which supports our way of life -- from our roads and railways to our cars and computers -- is safe and secure. They are not the enemy, but all too often we only hear about their efforts when something goes wrong.

But the fact is that 99% of the time, they are doing their jobs in such a way that we don't even notice their heroic work and we take it for granted. We complain about how our taxpayer dollars are being used and neglect to acknowledge (or maybe we just don't know) that NASA's exploration of millions of miles deep in the universe can save a person's life a half-mile deep in the earth. I don't know about you, but I think that's an awesome use of my money and I'm glad to make that investment.

So let's celebrate that these 33 men are being lifted out of a mine shaft to new and hopefully long lives, and at the same time appreciate the vital role that government and governmental entities perform not only in these extraordinary efforts, but in the mundane -- and possibly more important -- functions that preserve our freedoms and our future.

They probably felt like it was 69 days in hell. My gosh, their ages range from 19 to 63 and those men have formed bonds like brothers over those days. My whole hope is for them to have long and joyful lives here on earth. I'm sure millions hope for the same. Have you watched any live coverage?

The memory of the "white butterfly" grabbed my heart. Here's the first article I found on it:

Up here in the dry atacama desert folklore mixes with superstition and superstition blends with religion. And as the cold night draws in, miners' families huddle together and light a fire. And they tell tales and the tale they're telling is about the miner and the white butterfly….

PART OF THAT STORY IS TOLD HERE…IN A LETTER SENT BY MINER JORGE GALEGUILLOS FROM THE BOWELS OF THE EARTH.

IT WAS AFTERNOON ON AUG. 5 GALEGUILLOS AND FRANKLIN LOBOS WERE DRIVING A TRUCK INSIDE THE MINE.

STANDUP:

Galeguillos' letter reads…I had gone out to the workshop and as we were driving back down, a slab of rock caved in just a few seconds after we drove past. Just ahead I saw a white butterfly.

GALEGUILLOS' BROTHER ELEODORO, ALSO A MINER, CAN'T EXPLAIN HOW A BUTTERFLY FLEW MORE THAN 500 METERS DEEP INTO THE MINE.

LIKE MOST MINERS HERE, HE'S A FERVENT CATHOLIC AND DEEPLY SUPERSTITIOUS, HE BELIEVES THE BUTTERFLY WAS PROTECTING HIS ELDER BROTHER'S LIFE.

ELEODORO GALEGUILLOS: I don't what that was. Maybe that butterfly was a little angel passing in front of them or a little god saying hurry up there's danger down here."

STANDUP:

The blocks came down and the dust flew up the last thing he saw during that cave-in was the white butterfly. After that he said I can't see a hand in front of my face, I can't see a hand in front of my face…

GALEGUILLOS AND LOBOS WERE BLINDED BY THE DUST BUT THEY SURVIVED.

ELEODORO GALEGUILLOS: They were saved by a sliver. The cave-in was going on above and below them and it was already burying things."

MINING CONSULTANT MIGUEL FORTT IS NOT GIVEN TO FLIGHTS OF FANCY.

HE SAYS WHITE BUTTERFLIES FLUTTER AROUND THESE PURPLE FLOWERS THAT BLOSSOM IN THE DESERT EARLY IN THE MORNING. BUT THEY RARELY FLY DEEP INTO A MINESHAFT.

HE SAYS THE TWO MINERS SLOWED DOWN TO OBSERVE THE BUTTERFLY AND THAT SAVED THEM FROM DRIVING INTO ROCKFALLS TRIGGERED BY THE FIRST CAVE-IN.

"People who are religious would call this a miracle. From a scientific perspective the butterfly may have flown into the mine on air currents. You can draw your own conclusions but that butterfly saved their lives."

OK lets discuss the last man out I have concerns for this person.

1. How is he going to lock the door?? The doors to this thing are a big item and concern with the locking mechanism.

2. What happen if it need guidance up the hole, how is the last man going to do this?

3. Who is going to help him with all the monitors, wet suit, ect that he needs to have on?

I know I can't be the only one concerned about this. ???

The last miner doesn't have to sweat those details.

There are four or five guys from the rescue team down in the hole.

I expect they have it all figured out.

Carla, good for you, you're thinking ahead of time. I didn't have that on my worry list. I pray they have it all figured out. I know they sent extra help down and I'm counting on their expertise.

At this moment in time, #32 just arrived to greet the mother of his new baby. Again, I'm a mess of emotion. This is all so beautiful.

You're right, it's been dangerous from the get-go. This is not a true success story until ALL are safe and sound - the rescuers are mighty brave men, God bless them. Bring them UP.

And then, let the party start!! Thanks for thinking of the others, Carla. I thought of them on the way down ...but somehow lost focus until you brought it up and center. Thank you.

God bless this mission and all who are celebrating LIFE tonight. xoxoxo

I've tried to imagine volunteering to go down rather than up - I just can't.

I mean seriously..... what's the worst thing that could happen?:wah:

I think that it probably instilled much needed confidence in the miners that these folks came down to them. I just couldn't imagine doing it, myself.

Ahh, yes, when the first rescuer appeared it must have seemed like Heaven to the "33." I equate the rescuerers to firefighters who go into burning buildings. They are in a class of their own, outstanding and incredible.

I just heard it will take one hour and 15 minutes to get the rescuers/heroes out of there. We wait. This has been such an expression of love. Words cannot express. xox

It's happening. All of the miners have survived and now the rest of the rescuers are coming up. JOY!

From country to country, we witnessed history and miracles, anguish and joy, prayers answered. What a beautiful evening. again, no words ... just a few more heroes to be brought up and then the full picture of joy before our eyes.

g'night and Amen. Thanks be to God. We toast victory and love tonight, full force!

Anyone else notice?

Maybe when Chile is done with their president we could borrow him for a while. And his lovely wife as well.

Hard to believe a man can actually speak with no sign of a teleprompter anywhere and make sense and connect with the whole world using words he came up with all by himself. And lead the assembled folks in an impromptu singing of the national anthem. He didn't even have more important things to do, like running off to play golf or go campaign for somebody who is in trouble for supporting his sorry policies.

Number of miners trapped: 33

Week of the year that they were found: week 33

# of days to drill the rescue hole: 33

Date of rescue: 13.10.10. : 13+10+10 = 33

I noticed and thought the same, he was there front and center for each miner and the last 5 as well what a statement. He embraced them all like they were his own son's sincere, warm and present, imagine that. You could look into this man's eyes and see exactly who he is.

I think this has the potential for the big screen. Be interesting to see what american actors get cast in the lead roles...lol
