Unlike the Chilean Mine Rescue it now appears that a second massive explosion has killed 29 Kiwi miners. I am surprised that the U.S. Press has not covered this story like they did the Chilean Mine accident.

I've been keeping up on it. It seemed the gases were preventing aggressive activity as they didn't want to cause another explosion. It's just awful.

The media didn't really get fully invested in the Chile mine rescue until it was found that the miners were alive.

Then it became a sensation.

Unfortunately, dead miners are not as uncommon as we would like.

Terrible news about another explosion this morning, very sad. I'm annoyed with my local radio station for heading the 7am news with the damn royal wedding then they mentioned the overnight explosion as a little tag on at the end!

An interesting note.

While the media was covering the Chile mine rescue, over 100 miners died in other parts of the world, due to cave-ins, flooding and explosions.

In all, 2010 looks to be the deadliest year for mining in the last decade.

On the other hand, there were also more reports of miners rescued from disaster through the year. 29 in China while the fatal event in NZ was taking place.

Nothing quite as dramatic as the Chilean story.

Mining is the second deadliest industry on the planet.

Any guesses as to the first?
