I was surprised to receive the following rather vitriolic email from a friend in the States.
It concerns the Romanian tennis star Simona Halep. (see image and email original content below)
.
.
.
.
.
Another selfish athlete.
This is the kind of stuff that just ticks me off.
Wimbledon hopeful Simona Halep wants surgery to reduce the size of her breasts.
Halep is seen as one tennis's stars of the future after winning a host of junior titles and a place in the final of the junior French Open last year.
But the 5-foot-5-inch Romanian tennis star said she thinks her 34DD bust is holding her back.
"This autumn I'll have a breast reduction operation" Halep said. It's the weight that troubles me and my ability to react quickly."
"The breasts make me uncomfortable when I play.
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL THIS KID THAT WINNING ISN'T EVERYTHING!
THIS SELF-CENTRED, SPOILED LITTLE BRAT SHOULDN'T BE SO CONSUMED WITH "WINNING MAJOR TENNIS TOURNAMENTS!"
WHAT ABOUT US - THE HARD-WORKING EVERYDAY FAN?
34DD?
PEOPLE PAY TOP MONEY FOR JUGS LIKE THAT!
AND MANY PAY TO SEE THEM.
AND THIS LITTLE BRAT WANTS TO HAVE THEM REDUCED?
TICKS ME OFF.
SELFISH ATHLETE THAT SHE IS.
I myself don't see any problem with the young lady's desire to reduce the size of her breasts. Do you?

I can think of a few chix w/pretty faces ( you know, to complete 'the package') that would pay her Wimbleton type bux for those puppies.

One would have at least hoped that spreading this unfunny joke about a teenage tennis professional would stop once the surgery had been performed. I can't, on the other hand, see any possible way of updating the original "joke" to reflect the current situation. The surgery happened during the summer of 2008.

So did it improve her game?
My sister-in-law did the same surgery.
Her golf game improved significantly. (that wasn't the reason she did it, but, hey, I am for anything that improves one's golf swing.)

You seem completely oblivious to the fact that she's a real person.

If you want to indicate disagreement you need a question mark instead. We have, evidently, misunderstood each other. Whose use of English is to blame for that I'll leave to others to decide.
My criticism of your thread is your repetition of what can only have been a distressing personal comment. How is it ever going to die if it keeps getting reposted around the Internet?

spot, I believed the content of that email was genuine. I was shocked by the vitriolic attack on the young lady, so I posted it in to see what others thought.
Please read my post again, I am in sympathy with the young lady, I don't understand how you interpreted it any other way.

It will never go away.
Nature of the beast.
Even the I LOVE YOU virus email is still floating around, waiting for its next victim.
Deal with it.
Though, Binbag, a trip to Snopes or Hoaxbusters before posting such things would save us all a lot of vitriol.

I don't think this need be either confrontational or even critical, it's a question I've been trying to discuss for years. What does it take to voluntarily avoid giving offence to utterly innocent victims on the Internet? Is republishing that photograph of a 16-year-old Junior Tennis champion, in the context of "THIS LITTLE BRAT WANTS TO HAVE THEM REDUCED", victimisation or fair comment? Where's the line?

Good question.
I have often wondered myself.
It is part of the problem we face.
New People are constantly joining the internet, and there is no "Basic Training" to get them started.
They are suddenly exposed to this Brave New World, and after they first learn the basics, they are confronted with massive amounts of information. Some factual and some, not so.
They want to share in the thing, and they start getting the alarming notices about unbelievable stuff, and they either unthinkingly forward them off to all their new-found friends, propagating the bug, or like Binbag, and a few others, here, they post a message, asking about it.

Then by all means discuss the issue. Mocking my question rather than engaging with it reflects more on your own lack of moral integrity than on my perceived prudishness.

My comment addressed flopstock, though, and it certainly wasn't hers. All flopstock's done in this thread is cast mockery at my stance while refusing to engage with the issue itself.

I'm astonished by the direction this thread has taken.
The content of the email I quoted from (verbatim) and posted in was sent to me by a respected intelligent author/writer. I had no reason to disbelieve it. Btw, my subsequent search in Snopes (thanks for the advice LarsMac) proved negative.
If it is a hoax, then I'm amazed the sender and I fell for it but, at the same time, I would have been greatly relieved as the content was outwith the normal friendly emails I receive from this person.
The purpose of the email was to attack the young lady's decision to have breast reduction. My comment to that was....."I myself don't see any problem with the young lady's desire to reduce the size of her breasts. Do you?"
As initially mentioned, I was surprised by the vitriolic content of the email however, that fact has been overlooked.
I also made very clear I was defending the young lady, that fact also was overlooked.
I'm left with the distinct impression there's been a thoughtless knee jerk reaction to the post.
A simple reply informing me the email was a hoax (if it is one) would have been gratefully received. It may well have prompted me to ask for its deletion from the Board by one of the Admin team.

Not to mention a great picture.
Besides, there was no hoax involved, here.
It was odd though to see such a mail floating around 2 years after the fact.
BTW, the surgery doesn't seem to have improved her game significantly. yet.

I didn't overlook the fact that you appeared to be standing up for the young woman, BB. I even got that although it was sent to you as a joke, you didn't appear to see the humor in it.
And don't bother with an uncalled for apology for posting it in order to open it up for discussion. It's out there already, it's never going away and you didn't do that. Perhaps discussing it will make the next idiot stop and think before creating their own 'joke'.
