As you might have noticed, many changes are happening to the forum right now and spot, not being a person with smilie capability, is likely to hand over such issues to another party.
I'd like to start a discussion on what makes a good smilie and how ForumGarden might improve our smilie choices without having to categorize hundreds of randoms.
Start with the basics.
I present that smilies should have a hard outline like: :-3
All soft outlined smilies like:

are disgraceful and should be replaced with smilies that are sure of themselves.

Good point Koan many of our smiley icons aren't clear. There are millions out there that are expressive simple and could make post fun. :yh_peace

No smilie should ever under any circumstances move or flash or wink or dribble or wave its bits.

some movement is essential.
How do you get a normal smilie turned into a borg otherwise?

There are some smilie requirements that most connoisseurs agree upon.
Hard outlines
Legs and arms can be black lines only though hands can be gloved.
No smilie shall dominate in size lest it make other smilies feel insecure.

We could group them according to sentiment.
Start with "happy" including laughing.
:yh_rotfl is definitely a keeper

Need a few of the not-so-smilie smilies, as well.

You've no idea how difficult it is to participate meaningfully in this thread when you can't see any smilies on the screen at all.
Nor colours, before anyone asks.

If FG can't see smilies, how will he know what to upload?

We just need to decide which smilies should go and which ones should replace them. Send the files to FG and let him do all the work.

I'm so far unaware of the concept of a "file" of smilies. What exactly does one do with such a thing?

But, FG said he/she could, Spot said he/she/it, couldn't.

I run two browsers. One for FG has unchanged default viewing so I know it's the FG Administrator screen, the other for spot overrides all displayed proportional fonts with Sans-Serif 12 point and all colors with light grey background, blue hyperlink and dark brown text and some heavy-handed graphics elimination with Adblock. The entire Internet appears bland and uniform and far gentler on the eye.

Having them in one's possession, one uploads them to the emoticon folder and organizes them into categories.
eta: one also has to come up with clever shortcuts for them like :stomp:

Seriously, smilies?
Your arcade isn't working correctly and yet this is where you are wasting your time?

Ok. I'm going to start with a list of current smilies that suck (in my opinion)

In the past, smilie suggestions got chaotic so I'm trying to find a way to suggest replacements that keeps some order to the discussion.
Somehow or another "alien2" at the end of my previous list didn't end up being the alien2 gif... strange.
Anyway. I'm sorting through my smilie files (smiley is apparently a copyrighted term) and sorting them into categories:
1)must haves
2)better than what we haves
3)cute but random

My first suggestion list:
Must have happy smilies
combined with current happy guys

oh, we still need a better

Yeah, I'm counting on others to come up with better ones or add the missing emotions. It would be good if the categories keep the considerations and suggestions more organized.
Some replacement suggestions:

Sorry I can't help you. Too bad Nomad has dibs on his avatar, that's a killer. Perhaps if you can find out where he got it from you might find more similar to it.
