One of the few newspapers I read each morning is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it's one of the world's great newspapers. Besides, I've always rather liked the notion of Georgia once you get past the public image of their police. The recent headlines, though - maybe the State's just having a blip.

Regulators accused former insiders of a failed Alpharetta bank -- including the new chairman of the state Senate Banking Committee -- of negligence? What??

A Gwinnett County man is accused of tattooing 13 minors in his home? Why! (The tattooing, not the accused...)

I could drop a few more in the thread if anyone wants to patiently explain Georgia to me.

Here's another one out of Georgia.

Georgia Homeless Shelter Denies Access To Gays, Lesbians

A faith-based homeless shelter in Columbus, Ga. is drawing attention this week for closing its doors to gay individuals in need after kicking out two women they suspected were romantically involved.

Blimey. Are there no laws??

BBC News - Bristol gay couple win Cornwall B&B bed ban case was this week's ruling in an English court. And quite right too. What next? We don't allow foreign couples in our Bed-and-Breakfasts? No Irish or Muslims?

Faith-based bigotry is well past its sell-by date.

"My version of "Georgia" became the state song of Georgia. That was a big thing for me, man. It really touched me. Here is a state that used to lynch people like me suddenly declaring my version of a song as its state song. That is touching."

What an extraordinary state - I just went looking for the lyrics and found them in the Legal Code, fully listed. At Georgia General Assembly along with a magnificent testament to American Democracy, the Picture Book, something Georgians should take pride in.

Georgia is a fine place.

I graduated from High School there back in the sixties.

While there are still some vestiges of the "Old South Mentality" in the state, Georgia has grown to be one of the most diverse and forward looking regions of the US.

It looks inexplicably cold there today. 34 degrees? I didn't know that was possible so far south.

Coldest I have ever been was sitting in a Bateau out in the middle of the Okefenokee swamp and the temp was around 20.

It gets pretty damned cold all the way down into Central Florida every year around this time. The humidity makes it feel even colder.

My cousins near Atlanta were snowed in for three or four days last week.

Snow is not an annual thing that far south, but every few years it can snow enough to shut Atlanta down for a day or two.

Did anyone click on the Picture Book? That is a stunning bit of social engineering, whoever approved it should be given a medal.

... and anyone using GPS for car navigation in Georgia over the next month might find it glitchy.

FAA to pilots: Expect 'unreliable or unavailable' GPS signals

So there. You've been told.

Ive driven through Georgia many times. Lots of interesting history there but geographically most of the state is uneventful. The area north of Atlanta however is spectacular.

Uneventful meaning it's not half-way up the Rockies?

Nomie, your outdoors is as flat as a pancake, you've nothing to brag about. Except some piddly lake or other.

I'd like to see cotton being picked in fields and eat grits and hominy and sing spirituals in the gloaming and admire the glow of burning churches on the skyline. I'll pass on the whupping. And don't they have a crossroads where the Devil challenges you to a fiddle contest?

The Crossroads is in Mississippi.

Near Yazoo City.

Yup. That certainly sounds like you. In defense of MN we happen to have more shoreline than Canada, Hawaii and Florida combined. Within the boundaries of the lakes lie woodlands, a plethora of native wildlife such as wolves, deer, wild Turkey and many other species. Our lakes are not to be sniggered upon nor scoffed at.
