I was surprised when I read this piece and the fact that the U.S. holds most of the gold.

I would have thought that Russia or China would hold more. England is not in the top 13 nor is Spain. Spain, despite all the plundering of Central and South America during it's days of the Conquistadors did not hold on to enough of the yellow metal.

At the current price of $1,330 per ounce we're talking some big bucks.

I'd be surprised if the Spanish ever took any significant quantity of gold from the Americas.

It amazes me what Hollywood has to answer for. The Spanish convoy system for the treasure fleets was one of the most effective security measures of all time, the English only ever took four Spanish treasure galleons in three hundred years of trying. And I still think there was very little gold involved at any stage.

It can't have been the family silver, That Woman flogged it all long before he took office.

Total world gold production during the 1500s is estimated to have been around 36 tons; from 1900 to 1976 it was 76,428 tons. (Which still isn't all that much, incidentally. It's claimed that all the gold that's ever been mined would fit into a cube 18 yards on a side.)

Most gold production in the New World was Portuguese before the 19th century, the Spaniards made far more money from silver - the price ratio between gold and sliver is a lot wider now than it used to be. Except I can't find any figures on the web to back that up.
