Me and my wife recently bought a 2001 Hyundai Accent. I bought it knowing it had a check engine lamp that came on but it was at a good price. The last 6 weeks I have been tinkering with it as time allowed and found some bad o-rings on the fuel injectors and filthy oxygen sensors, one of which I broke when trying to get the damn thing out of the manifold.

The thing was still blowing a code (po422) for a bad cat and a couple of others. I took the car to an emissions "specialist" and I was told I needed a new catalytic converter. I asked the "specialist" how he had arrived at that conclusion and he basically said the computer told him so. Some specialist. Anyway I was quoted a price of $550 for a new CC. I did a lot of online research about CCs and apparently they fail for one of 2 reasons. They clog up or at a temperature of about 2000 df, they melt. I stumbled across this stuff.

CataClean Global Ltd.

I bought a bottle at a local auto warehouse and did everything exactly as it said on the bottle. It worked, not a single code. The car runs a whole lot better too. I paid $30 for it and saved over $500. Just wanted to let you know.

If you live in Cali you may save enough to buy a Bently. The cat for this car made to Cali emissions standards was 1200 to 1400 bucks. Gas here is rapidly heading for $4 a gallon, I haven't seen the MPG since I used it but me and the wife are going to Astoria this weekend I'll see then. I bet it will pay for itself in MPG alone.

The op is a keeper for when it happens to me - CATs are a rip off and to be able to fix one would be a godsend.

Many thanks Scrat :-)

Carla, it passed the Washington state emissions test. You live in Cali right? Good luck, I know your standards are a lot higher than ours.

Bryn. Cats apparently have some rare metals in them like palladium it's expensive stuff. Also for this car they sell the entire exhaust manifold as part of the kit, that's a rip off.

What I really didn't like is the service I was offered, I have always done most of the work on my vehicles with the exception of my wifes Pontiac which we sold a few months ago. It was a royal pain. I took this little beast to the shop because it was throwing several codes. All the guy behind the desk was interested in was selling stuff. I knew when I got there what a cat was and how it worked, I have never had any problems with them before though. I thought it through and did some research and here we are. Keep in mind, cats RARELY NEED TO BE REPLACED. Unless they become so clogged they cannot be cleaned, get hot enough to actually melt or are physically damaged they usually will last forever.

I don't think highly of the guys at the auto shops. I have a different ideals of "service" and I don't consider fleecing the customer one of them. I have done HVAC work and I've seen a lot of con jobs. I never replaced a capacitor because it was a little rusty, if it was rated at 10 mfd and tested at only 8 then I would replace it. That can kill a fan motor. I didn't replace whole contactors if I could get the contacts which will weld themselves together.

I think Americans really need to smarten up and become more self sufficient. Either that or let the people you think you can depend on take everything you have.

Palladium is why CATS are being stolen off cars here in California it's the newest item thieves are after.

Maybe it's why the "specialist" wanted to sell me a new one. It's pricey stuff.
