While we were at the Beach this morning, I could not believe all of the people just "Baking" themselves in the SUN!!! My Wife & I were under our "Shade umbrella", and also had SPF45 lotion on. Most of these people just ploped down and started Baking!!! No lotion, no shade!
Melanoma is just waiting for these people. This is a sore subject for us, as our favoiate cousin is Dying with this terrible disease. He has very little time left, and we hope we will be able to get to visit with him when we get back to CT next Wednesday! He was a "SUN" worshiper all his life, and never put any protective lotion on. In fact, he would put on "Baby Lotion" to fry himself, and he did. He's sure paying the price for that now!! :wah: (He will be 63 June 16, if he makes it)
So do enjoy & don't be afraid of the Sun, just take the proper precautions & protective measures! (You will thank yourself when you're older!!)

CARS, :driving:
:-6 Living in Sunny San Diego all my life I have a little experience with the SUN I'm lucky I have very Olive skin, so I don't burn. I have alway spent most of my summers in the sun, directly or indirectly just lots of SUN here.
My mother always made us protect or skin, way before sun screen was every on the market. It has paid off, I have little skin damage at 57, and I'm not a wrinkled prune like many of the Sun worshipers are here in San Diego.
Skin Cancer is the fastest moving cancer there is, it kills you quick...!! Yes a healthy glow in the summer looks better than pasty white. Having said that if your extremely fair skinned you should only be out 15 minutes at a time, then cover up.. YOUR TURNING YOUR SKIN INTO BACON..
Like my mother instilled in us growning up "EVERYTHING IN MODERATION, AND THAT INCLUDES THE SUN.. :-6

I have to admit to being a sun worshipper, i used to be in the sun at every opportunity but my skin really started to sufffer.
Having a tan certainly makes you look healthier & slimmer, but i've realised the risks outweigh the need to "look good".
The Australian government really push home the benifits of a high factor sunscreen, good on em. :-6
Its very sad news about your cousin Cars, a very sound warning to us all x.

I totally agree with all the `safety ` messages posted above (and don`t forget the `Sunscreen` record!) It makes me smile to think that a woman used to go to Spain for her fortnight`s holiday every year , 35 years or so ago, when I was working in London, and laugh at me for being TOO PALE......oh, I really pitied her as I was sure what she did was so dangerous!

I've never been one to lay in the sun, etc. Right now, I am sun burnt from a tanning bed. Not something I would normally do, but hear it really helps arthritis and at this point, I am willing to try anything. I've gone twice and am waiting until Wednesday before I go again out of fear of overdoing it. I must say, I didn't think I'd like it, but find it quite relaxing. I think moderation is the key.

ooo cars sorry to hear about your relative and the sun exposure. Not nice:(
I thought this was interesting to add to this sun story.
Do not sit buried under the sand in the sun either.....
One year while in hawaii, a friend sat out on the beach and buried his feet under the sand for a few hours thinking he was keeping them protected while he sun bathed. Wrong!! What happened about 2 hours after leaving the beach, his feet swelled up like hams, he could not walk without pain. By the time he got back home here, he was totally incapacitated could not even put on shoes. When he went to the Dr. he was told he quite litterally "baked" his feet. The sand acted like an oven, his feet cooked like a roast.
I know he fully recovered, but was in excessive pain for a long time.
But it makes sense if you think logicallly about it.

New Zealander's and Australian's have a huge incidence of melonomas and basal cell cancers. Much higher than any place else in the world. This is due to the ultra violet rays penetrating the atmosphere more readily in the Southern Hemisphere. Even on a mildly warm & sunny day you can burn in 15 minutes.

Thanks Peg, My wife fell asleep about 5 minutes before the call, so I did not wake her, I'll tell her in the morning. I just had to tell someone, as I myself can't sleep now, and will be up all night. :wah:

A story has been run on the news here in the UK over the last couple of days showing a picture of a very pretty 14 years of age.
Alongside the her pic is a specialist picture showing the damage sunbeds have done to her skin, she has the skin of a 25 year old!
Doctors warned her that if she did'nt stop using salon sunbeds then she's highly likely to have skin cancer by the age of 30.
She has now reduced her sessions to a couple a month.

Cars I am sorry to hear about your relative.
Here in the UK we are notoriously bad at this, i think it's because it is cloudy a lot of the time as soon as the sun comes out we are stripped down pretty pronto. Even worse when we get abroad. i was amazed on a recent trip to Florida to see so many people especially young kids uncovered, as has been said Australia has been really proactive in this field but it seemed to me that the Sunshine State was not getting the message through. France as well has always been pretty good I can remember as long as 20 years ago being sprayed with UV protector for free on the beach.
