As a alternative to burial, entombment or cremation they now have ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS------

New in mortuary science: Dissolving bodies with lye - ABC News

If they would use a good red wine instead of lye I might consider it.:wah:

I thought the Mafia had been using it for years

Should I ever adopt mass murder as a pastime, alkaline hydrolysis will top my list of hygienic disposal techniques.

"things the public might find more troubling routinely flow into sewage treatment plants in the U.S. all the time. That includes blood and spillover embalming fluid from funeral homes."?

My goodness they'd not get away with that in this country.

Space is a premium on this Planet I think it is a great idea. Dead is dead they won't care or feel a thing. :)

Maybe not, Carla, but how are you proposing to neutralize fifty kilos of caustic soda? It's vile stuff to just pour down the sink.

Good point wasn't considering that.

Could be worse mind. Could be phenol. I remember being in a lab once and an assistant losing a huge patch of skin from one hand, just peeled off like a rubber glove, from a 10% phenol solution spill. Caustic soda does just the same but I always reckoned it was slower-acting.

I left instructions for my kids to use the shredder (like in Fargo) and put me in their flower bed.

Finally I will get to be useful.

Seriously, I wonder at the energy costs of this vs. Cremation.

And the thought about goiing up is smoke is not nearly as troubling to the old ego and the idea of being flushed down the sewer.

I remember seeing that in some places, like Tibet, they used to hack the body up and feed it to the buzzards. That seems a bit more environmentally sound to me that flushing the resultant sludge down the drain.

In Bristol we have a Tower of Silence on top of Brandon Hill where bodies can be left to raptors. It takes a couple of weeks to strip them to clean bone. The council charges £75, last time I checked.

Watched a TV program about just that. They call it a Sky burial, it falls to a particular man who has the task of dismembering the corpse and feeding it to the birds.

The reason being the ground is too frozen to bury, and a lack of wood to burn the corpse.
