...played at your funeral?

I've been feeling rather morbid of late and started plotting out my will and it got me thinking about songs I would like played at my funeral.

I decided I would like played:

Footloose - Kenny Loggins, I've always loved this song, it'll get me up dancing every time, may seem rather upbeat for a funeral, but it'll say "me" at least.

Forever Young - any version, it just seems meaningful and appropriate.

Bed of Roses - Bon Jovi, love them, and Bon Jovi have a song for every occasion, this one seems appropriate out of most of their songs.

Fireflies - Owl City - Loved this song from the moment I heard it, it's so pretty and tinkly.

So has anyone else given any thought to this?

Yeah I have-----------I'm kinda partial to "Oye Como Va" by Carlos Santana. No funeral though, played during the scattering of my ashes.

Nice choice Lon might use that one at the scattering of ashes also. No funeral can't stand them nor do I want one they give me the creeps. Just remember me and have a party.

to old fashioned and some do not like hymns....just to religious or same old stuff.

most want their own song now, I have picked out one when my mom passes, its a part of how you feel and you want to express that.

It is, I suppose, possible that at least some of the few remaining Christians in the first world, like myself, might actually retain a recognizably Christian structure to our funeral service. Such as singing hymns, for example.

Does your ideal modern post-Christian funeral include a prayer for the bereaved, Odie? If so, to whom is it directed?

there will of course a minister present and prayer.

I cannot for the life of me imagine what benefit a minister might bring to the occasion.

The solace of a good hymn or two, on the other hand, is immense. They - hymns - discuss death, they put it into perspective, they remind those who have gathered of the last time they were summoned and the next time they might be expected. Funerals are meant to be planned for the survivors, not for the dead.

Here's a verse from each of three hymns I'd be pleased to sing. Or I suppose, if it's my funeral, hymns I'd commend to those present.

Our brother the haven hath gained,

Out-flying the tempest and wind,

His rest he hath sooner obtained,

And left his companions behind,

Still tossed on a sea of distress,

Hard toiling to make the blest shore,

Where all is assurance and peace,

I should note that I then put on a playlist made up of her favorite songs, mostly upbeat, to celebrate her life with our friends.

Forty years ago I was firmly entrenched in what was becoming the Small Is Beautiful anti-pollution sustainable cultural diversity movement. A World War Two RAF glider pilot - the lack of an engine is appropriate in retrospect - called Hurricane Smith released the wake-up anthem for the times. How anyone can think environmentalism is new I've no idea. This is 1971, this is magnificent, this is Don't Let It Die and you can definitely play it to start my wake.

As for the service itself though, they can end it with And Can It Be because it's as good a finale to a funeral as I can imagine, if perhaps slightly presumptuous.

I always liked the traditional New Orleans funeral procession where the band is playing the sad dirge and suddenly breaks into joyous music with the band bee bopping around.
