Some of these Comic Book characters of my youth have been made into a movie.

From memory all of our superheroes came by way of DC and Marvel - our comics were more anti-heroes from the Dandy, Beano and Eagle comics such as :-

I think the only real equivalent to the Marvel comics was (is?) 2000AD.
It's like Marvel, but with added dysfunction and generally much darker. Hopefully the link will give you some idea of it.
2000 AD Online
It's a long time since I read it, but half an hour after posting Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog (a Genetic Infantryman) have bubbled into my consciousness...

As a kid I always thought american comics were rubbish, every time the hero got in trouble he had a superpower to get him out of it. Did like wonder-woman though but that wasn't due to the story lines. We had a diet of proper war comics as well as the beano and dandy there was victor, wizard and of course the commando books. The commando books were based on real ww1 & ww2 events published by individuals who thought the stories were worth retelling. They've recently reproduced them in book form.

Still feel the same, can't be bothered with batman and the like although they're good entertainment. Real life is always more startling than any story can be.
